This Dell desktop is suddenly extremely slow on boot, logon response, and input command response. The problem first manifested when the computer was restarted when I returned after a 36 hour absence. Before leaving I had exited all programs, and used "Start" to shut it down. I did not stay to watch it complete the shutdown cycle and turn itself off, however. It may have attempted and failed a massive MS imposed update, including the huge DotNet update, as the shutdown was on the 21st of October.
After I left, and unexpected, and unexpectedly severe weather front came through. The computer is connected to the internet via a wireless broadband connection, which is much slower than a DSL or cable connection, though generally satisfactory. It does take a while to complete very large downloads, however.

APSB15-24 Critical Adobe Reader security update for Reader 11.0.12.18
CpuOct2015-2367953 Critical Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update for Java 8.0.45.14 32-bit
I hope that satisfies requirements for system info.
I've been wrestling this problem for about 20 hours now, except for sleep time. No change. If I were less patient, I'd think it was broken; boot "loading Windows" message is on screen about 80 minutes before the logon screen is presented. After logon is completed the "Welcome" screen is on about 50 minutes before presenting the desktop. Control Alt Delete returns fail messages unless all other processes have completed, and then takes about 10 minutes to return the Task Manager screen.
However, the cursor is responsive to the mouse. The system is not responsive to mouse and cursor input, except very slowly.
Who can tell me what I might do to repair this situation?
