Hi
I have a WD Caviar Blue 1TB hard drive installed on my living room PC and suddenly it became really slow. Usage goes up to 100% with almost no stressing. I was copying a movie from my external HDD and the first 5 seconds were OK, showing 30MB/s as usual, but suddenly the speed dropped to under 1MB/s and the disk usage to 100%, until it went down to 0 Bytes/s and the PC got stuck. Any ideas of how this happens and how can I fix it?

I tried running ubuntu out of an USB drive to see if it was the hard drive or windows having problems but it won't let me access it. HD Tune says everything is OK and gives no errors.

Solution
Another thing to check would be the SMART data for the drive. Failing drives tend to slow down, and this slow down can sometimes appear only when reading or writing to certain parts of the drive.

I really have never installed SATA drivers, just the default windows ones, but I don't think that is the problem because it worked perfectly fine like a week ago, but I'll try it just in case :)

I checked the SMART data from HD Tune and my CRC error count was 80.000. It advised me to change the cable so I did it and changed the motherboard port also just in case and the issue seems solved. Thanks a lot!
