If what your describing is what I think it is - Bad news - your display is defective.

In basic terms you have lets say bulbs giving your brightness and one of the two went dead which is why you can still see a display but at half potential.

I've seen quite a few of these come in at the tech shop - however I never actually even attempted to repair one. But I believe each time my co-worker had to replace the display on the laptop.

I hope this helps but like I said I don't have direct experience on this one.

I agree with covertxt5 on the problem. I don't think you need replace the entire screen though. I am not sure how they are integrated in laptops but on normal monitors it is just a really bright bulb that you can replace.

Have you made sure that you don't have a power saver option on that reduces your LCD brightness? Does your LCD get brighter when you plug the computer into the wall versus using the battery?

It might sound stupid but I would double check your power saver options just to make sure your LCD isn't set to some low power saver option that reduces the brightness before you go to replace the LCD

Excellent point, hadn't thought of that. On the same note if you hit the fn (function) key you can manually adjust the back light level, you probably already know this though. Sometimes I accidentally do this on my laptop so I thought I would suggest it.
