I had a hard drive fail on my desktop PC. I've been very diligent over the years about backing up my data to an external drive via file history and image backup. Until I can acquire a new hard drive, I started restoring file history to my laptop. Unfortunately, the backup drive start showing signs of failure as well. I was able to offload some stuff to another external drive and restored some file history to my laptop. Unfortunately, the drive quit before I restored my massive documents folder. From what I can see, it might be bad sectors. I would really like to salvage the rest of the data from the drive if possible, It's a Western Digital 6TB My Book (WDBBGB0060HBK-NESN). Any ideas? Thanks!

The first thing to do is stop using the drive, as continuing to do so may degrade the drive further. The only thing left to do here is to send the drive off to a data recovery service.

In the mean time, start planning on updating your backup plan. The bare minimum satisfies the 3-2-1 rule:
  • Three copies of the data
  • Two physically separate copies (e.g., three copies on the same device doesn't count)
  • One copy offsite

Yes, I am aware of redundant backups. I have a blu ray backup from last year in a firebox. I was seeking feedback on current issue. If I have to pay someone to recover it, it will be considered a lost cause. Maybe someone else will have some additional idea(s).
