Hello,
Left the property for 3 weeks during Christmas and took my partner's tower with us. Came back to find the PC wouldn't boot correctly.
I am no slouch when it comes to computers but this one has me stumped. There is quite a longish repair attempt story coming up, so I will shorten it to the best of my ability.
She has a Win 8.1 custom built machine.
SSD: Samsung EVO 120gb SSD.
HDD :1Tb Western Digital HDD
OS: Win 8.1 Pro
Motherboard: Asus M5A97 R2.0 Motherboard
RAM :HyperX FURY Series 4GB DDR3 1600MHz CL10 DIMM Memory Module - Blue RAM
Processor: AMD FX8320 Black Edition 8 Core Processor
PSU : Corsair Builder Series CXM 600W Modular 80 PLUS Bronze Certified ATX/EPS PSU
GPU: Asus Nvidia GeForce GTX 760 DirectCU II OC 2GB GDDR5 Graphics Card
The problem:
-Step 1 PC boots through the ASUS flash screen then onto a white blinking cursor. Stays like this.
-Step 2 Press Ctrl alt del and it boots to a black screen. Stays like this.
-Step 3 Press Ctrl alt del and it boots to a black screen then it flashes (keyboard n mouse go off) and it boots to desktop. Time in the corner is wrong (off by 20 mins or so) and no option to put computer to sleep. The windows icon didn't show during boot sequence. Doesn't look 100%.
-Sometimes multi-coloured patched pixels appear randomly, only on the desktop, that (often) move when the mouse cursor goes over them. Never completely disappear
-Updated it a couple of times and sometimes the bottom half of the screen was black during % update. Like 80% update complete, would be covered up by a black box that covers the bottom half of the monitor.
Other problems:
Keyboard + mouse during the step 1 to 3 doesn't work for more than 2 seconds in Bios + Boot sequence menu. Tried different USB ports multiple times, no avail.
The attempts:
-Replaced RAM and it didn't change anything. Placed partners SSD and HDD into my tower. They both worked no problem, her SSD booted her OS perfectly (but her desktop was windowed on my screen) on my tower.
-Cleaned tower with compressed air, not much dust left.
-Reset Bios
-Once it worked the first time, I performed a REFRESH, this went to approx 70% before restarting and hitting the three steps above. I assumed that this bugged everything.
-Tried to boot through Win 8.1 disk but the computer would just show a black screen. No asus logo.
-When it worked (see below) I performed a stress test on the GPU, no problems occurred. Ran drive scans, no problems. Updated graphics card, didn't help.
-Wiggled gently the cables in the ports and that didn't help.
The funny business: (by work perfectly I mean, straight boot to desktop, no issues, Windows image displayed during boot. Clock is correct and Sleep option is available)
-Funny step 1: Plugged her tower with my monitor/keyboard/mouse/Internet cable/power cable and it worked perfectly
- Funny step 2: Plugged her stuff back in, worked perfectly for a couple of times. Then when the tower was moved back to its original spot, it went back into its problems again.
-Swapped HDMI cable over and again repeated Funny step 2.
-Tried all combinations of keyboard/mouse/power cable/HDMI cable and two monitors. It doesn't work anymore. Something has happened.
-Sometimes nothing shows on my monitor and cable but it shows on her monitor and cable.
My conclusions:
Steps 1 to 3 are still happening no matter what combination of cables I put in.
Sometimes the PC worked away from its original spot (so its out in the open) but when it is put back it only works once or twice then goes back to steps 1 to 3.
When it boots it either boots into:
Desktop with flashing squares of colour, clock that is wrong and no sleep option. Desktop icons in different place.
Desktop with clock that is wrong and no sleep option. Desktop icons in different place.
Desktop that works perfectly well, everything is where it should be.
Please help!!!!!
