Hi !

So i have a r9 290 and fx 8350 and 8gb of ram but i am getting about 24 fps in the game with the game at ultra with godrays at medium.
i am running at 2560x1080 and i am experiencing no spikes but a constant 24 fps which is way to low for these specs, but is this a cpu issue or a AMD optimization problem? since a r9 290 should not have 24 fps with dips to 19 in fallout 4....

Solution

Oke just fixed it by setting my hyperthreaded cores in the .ini file to 8
it was on 4 but my cpu has 8 cores.
this resulted in my cpu going far higher and my gpu always at 99% instead of 20%

Which line in which .ini file did you change?

guess he is too busy actually enjoying the game now! This horrible optimization is killing me. I mean if I can run Witcher 3 on Ultra 45-60 fps and not fallout 4 on high with 60 fps that is ridiculous right???

I'm pretty sure he is talking about inumhwthreads=8 or whatever amount of threads you have. I have tried this .ini tweak multiple times and it did nothing. I really want to know the specific value in the specific .ini because nothing makes my game utilize my hardware. No matter what it hangs out at about 30-50 percent gpu and cpu. This results in horrible framerate. I need to know his miracle fix! Hopefully someone else can come around and give us a fix. Pls anyone????

I have an AMD FX-8320 @ 4.5 ghz and a R9 290x 4gb at 1100 gpu and 1400 mem and get a solid 60 fps @ 1920x1080 never dips below 45 fps... I am running windows 10 with the latest patch and the latest beta amd drivers. No issue. There is a 15.7.1 chipset driver for amd motherboards you guys can try installing. I am still curious about the ini file changes for hyperthreading if mine is at 4 i am upping to 8 and maybe the 45gps dips go away

Yeah, I think my problem is that I didn't overclock my CPU. I did try to OC my CPU to 4.0ghz, but when I did that my PC kept freezing when I was playing games :/

I have the ASRock 970 Extreme3 Motherboard

What cpu do you have?

The fx-8320 also

All i did to overclock was up the multiplyer... Try just getting it to run turbo speed 4.2 ghz first then ease it up from there till you have issues then back it down one notch... I can not really overclock as when i do 5ghz with a minor voltage bump my vreg overheats on my gigabyte 990fxa-ud3 motheboard :-(

Just curios what ram do you have? I need to test a theory. I am running single-channel ram Kingston hyper x 1866 8gb. I think dual-channel might make it run faster. that is the only variable that might be different between us because I have a fx-8320 @ 4.3ghz and an r9 290 slight OC. My game runs at 60 constant everywhere but the city. where looking in a certain direction can yield around 15 fps. My cpu and gpu usage goes down to around 30 percent. I heard ram can make a huge difference in fallout 4 and I think it might be bottle necking.

Same thing happens on low settings too. Have you gotten to the City???

I have 16gb of adata 1600 mhz and its running dual channel speed is gonna ammount to 5 fps from 1600-2400mhz its dual channel that will help more

City only dips occasionally to the low 40's

Humm have you been on top of any skyscrapers yet? I can get around 40-60 fps walking around but looking down on the city from a skyscraper kills it completely. Usage goes down and not up. i get higher usage in buildings. Where i get 60 fps solid constantly.

Guys, wonder why i feel fallout 4 much lighter than witcher 3. My i5-2320 3,5GHz ,crosffire 2x 280, Z77A-G45 msi motheroard, 2x 4GHz ram, 850w psu, SSD 512Gb OCZ arc100 (yeah, all budget build). The gpus are overclocked but without budging the vcore at all, not even power (1150/1500 on 280, 1100/1400 on 7950).
It stable running 60fps (limited due to my old lcd tv) Ultra, everything on 1080p. A few bug found, but it was common bugs in game discussions.

My pc is not as hot as when playing Dragon age inquisition or witcher 3. Cpu and gpu very rare gone max.

Not bad for an old and budget build.

Lucky man, very lucky man. I wish my build would have just worked out. Fallout is literally utilizing about half of my graphics card and 80 percent of my cpu. r9 290 OC fx-8320@4.3ghz. I cannot fathom why this game runs the way it does when witcher 3 can run on all ultra 60fps!

Well my 390x is getting used about 0% - 20% maximum and I'm getting 24 fps in fallout 4. Black ops3 utilizes all my GPU and solid 60 fps 1440p. even when i turn FO4 down to 1080p low i still get shite fps because it isn't using my gpu at all. What a let down and a disgrace. my build is fine in all other games. I have fx8320 also with 8 gig ram and fallout on SSD ffs.... bloody pisstake bethesda. Glad I never bought your game before i realised how crap it ran. I was going to buy after testing a pirated copy. but won't bother now

Same here bud. miniscule gpu usage on my 390x and 24 fps lol. screw fallout. I'm sticking with black ops 3 and moving on to assassins creed syndicate soon as it downloads and hopefully that will use my beefy gpu. had it with fallout. it has ruined the experience for me now and no longer care lol

@steelninja and garretsw: is it maybe because you guys using amd cpu? I know my i5-2320 3,5GHz are lower in spec, but more recently amd cpu are proven not effective to utilize its 8 core in newer game. My only problem is when playing dragon age inquisition where my cpu get to 73 degree. My hsf is a cheap $15 deepcool iceedge 3, but when I use the hsf with my old phenom X4-B55 (X2-555 unlock) @4GHz it working like a charm. Might be the thermal paste mistake (in X4 I use original paste, when moved to i5, I think its a cooler master ic value), i might have to re-apply the thermal paste.

I was hoping this was a starting point of the benefit using crossfire/SLi. I think its about time the driver starting to mature like when dual core cpu get very big boost performance starting window 7. I remember when playing battlefield bad company 2, using winxp, its unplayable, change into win7, suddenly it can play very well (with the same hardware).
As far as I know, starting 15.7 (amd driver available when I purchased my second R9 280), its already combined the vram into 6Gb (around 10Mb lost, but its nothing to complain). I am surprised myself when testing the crossfire using GTA5, the gpu setting shows my vram were 6Gb. I do know that normally crossfire didn't combine vram since i was planning the crossfire from my old 6850 but cancel it knowing its sucks to CF 2x 6850.

Love to push my cheap stuff to the limit under safe protocol.

FO4 is a (very)good game. I stopped playing dragon age (due to its hot cpu problem) because FO4 is so much fun (and safer) for me. Love building our own slave spots 😛

AMD could be part of the problem but I have heard of plenty of people having problems (the same low usage one) with intel CPU and Nvidia GPUs as well. It is just more pronounced on AMD. Even titan X cards are struggling to run decently in certain parts of the city. It is just a horribly horribly horribly optimized game. (they obviously no longer care about the PC Crowd).

Ok, i got bad news. I just found out that my stability didn't last. When i started to get into diamond city, fps starting to drop like crazy (some even drop to 18 fps). Guess I am not lucky at all. I am apologize for giving false hope.

Still the gameplay is too good to pass. The only thing i hate about it is the storage were not combined together. This is very similar to early witcher3 when we have to organize storage for crafting. Why not combined the storage for all settlement? It will help a lot. Don't you guys agree?

Turn shadow distance down to Medium. When I did this I almost doubled my fps in Diamond city. From 20s to 40s. Medium shadow distance can help but even then the FPS can still get around 20 in places outside diamond city. This game is a hot mess. I still love it though and have about 30 hours into the game already!
