FAN POWER QUESTION

I have a case fan with just a red/black female connection. The motherboard has a 3 pin connector (male) for a case fan. Is it possible to connect this type of fan too the motherboard? Is it just red/red black/black and ignore the yellow? (I am assuming this red/black/yellow as it is the same pin configuration as the CPU connection).

If the connectors are the same type (3 holes on cable for 3 pins on motherboard, and the red/black are in the same posistions as the CPU fan's cable. red to red and black to black) then it should work.

The Red= Positive
The Black= Ground
The Yellow= Rotation Signal (to be used by fan monitoring software and BIOS to tell you how fast in RPMs your fan is rotating, and if your fan is rotating as fast as it should).

If you use your fan (the one you mentioned) you won't be able to tell what it's RPMs are, but it will work fine otherwise as long as the connectors are the same. If you want full functionality, then you need a fan with all three wires.

Knowing the RPMs of your fan is nice, in case it ever fails and your case air temperature starts to rise (this is a real concern if you are overclocking, but much more of a concern if it was your CPU fan! -Overclocking or not).
