I have my fan curve set up where the fans (CPU, case) spin up when the CPU package temp hits 40°C. The temp spikes a lot with just normal activities like surfing, etc. The noise doesnt bother me, but would this be detrimental to the fans? They end up spinning up from 650/1100RPM (CPU/CASE) to about 750/1300RPM for a few seconds then back to 650/1100RPM. It can happen a couple times each minute while using computer. If the temp hits 60° C the fans max out, but I dont see that unless gaming.

My Samsung EVO SSD drives have between 150-300 GB free. They are both about 4 years old but have 99% life left according to Samsung Magician.

I am really not worried about the cooling right now, as the temps are very good with the temp curves. I am just worried about the fan hardware with my current curves, if in fact the constant speed shifting is bad. Am I wearing my fans out? Thanks!

Update your post to include full system hardware specs and OS information.

PSU: make, model, wattage, age, condition (original to build, new, refurbished, used)?

Disk drive(s): make, model, capacity, how full?

Fans and case: how arranged? Is it possible for you to take a photograph or provide some sketch showing the current arrangement along with airflow directions for each fan?

How are the fans and curves configured? As I understand your post the CPU/case gets hot very fast and then, when the fans kick in, cools down very fast. "Hunts" back and forth. And that would be wearing....

Three immediate thoughts:

1) Fan curves not as they should be.

2) PSU not able to manage the power demands of gaming.

3) Internal case air flows not sufficient for proper and even cooling.

Am I wearing my fans out?
No you're not.

Fan wearing is an unavoidable natural cause, and varying fan speeds should not affect the longevity of the fan by that much.
The fan is operating somewhere between its max and lowest (its fine if it goes to lowest) so the longevity shouldn't be a problem unless it suddenly spikes to full speeds. :vendredi:

This may help. We tend to expect that fan speeds will change by tiny amount so that they appear to go smoothly from one speed to another over a period of time. BUT fan speeds actually are changed in discreet steps according to what "zone" or range the temperature sensor reports. In your case you have set up custom "fan curves". I suspect it just happens that the system commonly operates in a workload (and heat generation) range very close to a temperature where your curves require a speed change. So the temps (and hence fan speeds) change frequently for a small actual temp change. Find the normal TEMPERATURE that your system is operating, then try setting the TEMPERATURE part of your fan curve in that range to a slightly higher setting. This will let the system keep the slower speed until the temp gets higher that is usual for your uses, end then it will speed up.
