Far Cry 3 Crashes and Restarts my PC?

Hi everyone!

I recently purchased FarCry3 after a friend suggested I try it out, and I have to say i'm glad he did! However, after playing for an hour or so I started to have an issue, which now happens within 10 minutes of starting the game every time. What will happen is this, I start the game, (Which was purchased through Steam and is run through the Ubisoft launcher software), I click on continue game, and then I start playing with no problems. But after around 10 minutes, the game freezes, the speakers make a horrible loud buzzing sound for a second or two, and then my pc will go to the BSOD screen, but wont actually show what the BSOD was because it restarts too quickly. I am running the game on Ultra settings, with overclocked GPU's and CPU, however both overclocks are stable. My temps stay relativly low, CPU never goes above 45-50 degrees, GPU normally hangs around the 65-70 degree mark. Below are my system specs:

AMD FX-8350 @ 4.4ghz
Zalman CNPS9900-NT CPU cooler (Air + Fan)
2 x EVGA FTW Nvidia GeForce GTX 670's @ +15%
32gb Kingston HyperX Beast @ 1866mhz (4 x 8gb) Dual channel
Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0
Intel 520 Series 180gb SSD (C drive)
1tb Seagate Barracuda 7,200rpm 32mb cache (D drive)
Corsair AX850 Professional Series Gold 850W PSU
Zalman Z11 Plus case

Windows 8

I have already updated to all the latest drivers, and I have the latest BIOS version for my mobo.

Try lowering your GPU's OC and see if that will work.... Did you also stress test both the GPU and the CPU at the same time? was it stable?

I have previously already lowered both the GPU's and CPU to base clocks, and the same thing happens. I stress tested both the CPU and GPU's using software such as Prime95 and Heaven Benchmark. Both the CPU and GPU's clocks were adjusted accordingly until both were perfectly stable.

Did you try to run Memtest? anyway, if your hardware isn't the problem, it might be the game.... is the game updated?

If you are talkinng about the Windows integrated memory test, then yes. I have run this, which made several passes over the DIMMs. No problems were found. I have not however run any other form of memory diagnostic.

I downloaded the game only a couple of days ago, and it was a download, aka not from a disk. I assume that all up to date patches and fixes would have been installed then? I shall check nontheless tonight when I get home from work.

Just for some added info, I have not downloaded any unofficial patches or updates, and have not made any changes to the files of the game to retain integrity.

Have you tried other games & if so do they have any issues? Have you tried with SLi disabled? I don't know where they are in Win 8 but is there a windows event log that gives you any info on the crash. You could run Memtest to rule out a memory issue totally.

Hi everyone! Thanks for all your replies, but I believe I have found a solution!

Last night I was playing around with FarCry 3 again, and decided to try playing it on the base clocks of my GPU's. This seems to have eradicated the problem, as I played the game for a good 2 hours straight with no problems whatsoever. It would seem that FarCry 3 does not like OC'd hardware for some reason.

I would just like to know why a GPU overclock would interfere with a game in such a way? I would understand it if the GPU was reaching high temps and GPU usage and such, but GPU temps have never gone above 70 degrees and usage averages around 60% accross both GPU's. :-/

Its likely the RAM in the card is unstable when overclocked

The VRAM was only OC'd by 100mhz, so I doubt this was the problem. Although I wont rule it out. =)
