I'm planning to build a little HTPC and want a small capacity HDD(250ish GB) to start with until I upgrade it with a larger HDD. But I want to use the fastest HDD I can find to install the OS on. Can you guys help me pick out a good one?

Thanks.

For anything below 500GB go for a WD Caviar Black. If you can step up to 500GB Get the Samsung Spinpoint F3.

BTW: You won't need a fast HDD for an HTPC.

Or better yet go for an OCZ Vertex Turbo 250GB.

#1= Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB is the fastest hard drive available in terms of reads/writes. Average speeds hit around 110-130mbps read, and around 110mbps~ write.

#2= Surprise surprise, Samsung Spinpoint F3 500gb... Same as the 1TB, but second to it. 120 mbs read/105 writes.

Unfortunately some of the favorite retailers/etailers do not carry the samsung F3 500gb or 1tb versions.

Newegg is sold out for both the 500gb/1TB HDD's.

$66.14 for the 500gb@ Amazon
$94.99 for the 1TB@ ZipZoomFly supposedly has a $15 mail in rebate leaving it $80.
