Fax service not starting

Hi

my PC is windows XP SP2.

I have a problem with the fax service - it doesn't start properly.

The status of the service in service control manager is "Stopping" and the
fax printer is inaccessible when opening the fax console.

The last change to my PC was applying SP2. The faxfix registry entries
relating to rpc are already in the registry.

Reinstalling the fax components works only until the next reboot.

One workround is to kill process fxssvc.exe then start the service manually,
then it works normally.

I can't find any resources on this matter. Is the fax service trying to
start before an essential service? Current dependencies are Plug and Play,
Print Spooler, RPC and Telephony.

Please help.

Can you reset the startup type to "Automatic?"

I am having the same problem. The install does, in fact, set the
service to Automatic start. But since fax works when it is first
installed, before the reboot, I expect that there is a conflict with
another program which is also starting at the same time. (There are
many.) Also, the original complaint stated that fax worked after
killing the hung service and restarting manually.

This led me to try setting the Fax service to manual start. I am
pleased to report that the results so far have been good. The Fax
service is started as it is needed when ever a request to send a fax is
made or the the fax console is displayed. There is no need use a
separate command or action to start it.

Likely cause: corrupt registry key.
Solution: delete the old registry keys and then reinstall the Fax service.
In this
way, the registry keys are recreated.

1. Click Start -> Run, type "regedit" in the text box, and click OK.
2. In Registry Editor, locate the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Fax

3. Right click this key and click Export to backup this key to a registry
file.
4. Right click this key and then click Delete.
5. Click Start, and click Control Panel.
6. Double-click "Add or Remove Programs" and click "Add/Remove Windows
Components".
7. Remove the check mark from the "Fax Services" box, click Next, and click
Finish.
8. Click "Add/Remove Windows Components" put a check mark on the "Fax
Services" box, click Next, and click Finish.
9. Restart the computer to test this issue again.

This worked for my pc.
