Feedback on black screen?

I did a system back up on a portable hard drive and installed a upgraded hard drive. I then started the computer and was expecting the option to transfer files over to the new hard drive from the portable. At least the guide I followed explained it to be that easy. Now when I turn the computer on I just get a black screen. Any idea"s?

Have you installed an OS on the upgrade drive? Can you boot from the portable drive? If yes, have gone into the BIOS and changed the boot priority so that the portable drive is first in the list? What backup software did you use and can you provide a link to the guide you followed?
