Hello all,
I have a common problem with my company's mac server and I wanted to ask for additional information in regards to solutions.

We have a mac server that shares folders across our office's network. We have a common user that everyone logs into to access the network drives; the user is called "vision". We have an administrative account. The goal is to create an "IT" special folder that common users loggin in via "vision" cannot see. This folder would only be visible/accessed by three users.

On the Mac server application (it is a mac mini running Yosemite) I create a new group and 3 users to populate the group. I called the group "IT" and the users are based on their name. E.g. John Doe is jdoe

When I create the special folder and attempt to add the 'IT" group to list with read+write permissions, it shows "Fetching..." and nothing new displays.

I have read that this is a common issue when migrating data from an old OSX to a new OSX. In this case the data was transferred from a server running OSX Lion to a new server that is running Yosemite. Almost all of the research I have found instructs me to use the "repair permissions" feature within disk utility.

My question is will this affect the current system in any negative way? I would like to repair the permissions overnight/over the weekend, but I do not want to come back to work only to find that the common users loggin in with "vision" cannot access some or all of the files/folders on the server.

Thanks so much in advance,

I don't think that the "repair permissions" option in Disk Utility is going to help you as it only resets permissions on system files. You may want to read this very long thread on the Apple Support Forums that discusses this problem: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3198307?start=0&tstart=0

On the last page there is reference to a third-party application that may help you. I can't offer any personal recommendation for this program as I have never experienced this problem.
