Hi All,

I am fixing to design a Fiber (LAN) network for a small business (building) . Two PC's require over 100 meters cable.

1. Can I just simply install "fiber optic network card" on each PC and plug one end of the pre-terminated fiber optic cable to the PC and the other end to the router /switch ?

What are the equipments required to run a fiber optic LAN (Apart from the router / Switch and cable and Fiber network cards on PC)?

Thank you all!

Solution
Not a matter of "simply".

There are many factors to consider including the reasons/requirements for requiring fiber optic cables and the environment in which the fiber optic cables are being used.

And installation itself can be difficult and quite problematic. Start with the following links:

There are other similar links to be found.

If the installation is not done correctly all the time, work, and costs will be for nothing.

Two things you must do:

1) Explain the operational requirements that seem to be driving the need for fiber optic connections...

Two things you must do:

1) Explain the operational requirements that seem to be driving the need for fiber optic connections. You may not really need fiber especially if there is some operational misconception about what fiber will accomplish for you.

2) Put together and present a design that you feel will meet and support the requirements. For example; there are different types of fiber optic cables. Which type (clue = "mode") is appropriate for your requirements?

Your post is very much a "homework" type question and forum rules prohibit helping to do homework.

However, if you put together and present a design based on your requirements then other Forum members will be able to read and comment on your design and plans. Include the equipment you believe and understand to be necessary. Check the specifications so all components can connect and communicate.

Use imgur to post a diagram or sketch of the proposed fiber optic network.

The advantage to you is that you will learn more during the planning efforts and most likely end up with a workable and installable design.

Solution
100 meters is a huge distance in a building. Must be not so much a small business that can afford a building that large.

Most the issue will be running the fiber and protecting it. You can get creative and use pre built patch cables carefully run though conduit but in most cases special armored fiber is run and then terminated on site. Cutting and terminating fiber requires specialized equipment...and lots of practice to do it well.

You likely do not want to put a actual fiber nic in a end device. These are not real common. What you want is a media converter so you can use a copper patch to the pc. A media converter really is a 2 port switch 1 fiber 1 copper. The price switches with fiber optic options has come down a lot so it may be about the same price to buy a small 4 or 8 port switch that has fiber optic ports.

In many cases the more common solution used when you are not say over 200 meters is to put a switch in mid way to allow ethernet to go more distance. A $20 switch and a few long runs of ethernet cable tends to be a better choice when you have the option of placing equipment in the middle. Does not work so good if the path is say going between buildings which is where fiber is more commonly used.
