so i'm trying to build a nas i have a 4670k from another failed build, i've seen some posts on here saying all they use for there nas is a combo cpu/mobo or evan interated with 4 or 8gb of ram, so i'm wondering if it would be better to underclock the 4670k to 2 cores and get a mini itx or save some money and get a intergrated cpu. this is just going to be used as a file server just stoaring some important files and backups...i would be suing unraid for this with some nice and expensive (lol) 7200rpm 80gb drives..

Not sure why these are linked together as choices.

Don't put important data on a system that you don't really understand, on old drives, where's the back up of this data going to be? (raid isn't a backup)

i put the cpu because thats what i was planning on using no need to run all 4 cores if not needed, wasent sure if i would get less stability with less cores since that's not how it was shipped..and i understand it just fine, the reason i'm using these old drives is because i just need them to last until i can put the more expensive red drives from WD..and the backup is gonna be system backups and a few misc files..i'm only going to do this once..

well it'as only backups and a copy of a daily outdated excel file. nothing is going to there that can't be replaced quite easily plus they only gotta last till next paycheck, i'm just puting the backups on there incase somthing does amazingly happan in the next 20 somthing days..it's more a proof of concept and whatnot, nothing really pratical lol

well there important but there not the orginals and end all to be all..does that make sense? also if i do lose a drive it will give me exp for replacing a drive and rebuilding the array, plus there's this plugin in unraid that will check or preclear a drive and tell you if it's a good drive or not..the bathtub graph for drives is used here..look it up it's hard to explain

What RAID level are you considering?

RAID 1 - mirrored. 4 x 80GB drives in RAID 1 = 80GB actual space. Pretty tiny.

RAID 0 - striped. 4 x 80GB drives in RAID 0 = 320GB actual space. But there is no "rebuilding" after a fail. All data is lost.
The only 'recovery' is to grab the data from the daily backup you make before the drive fail.

There are various other configs, but those are the basics.
