I have noticed that every time I use the 'search' to locate a document there
are at least 3 identical documents that are found. There are a number of 'My
Document' folders in the system. Is there any way to streamline this so that
every item saved in My Docs is not copied several times? It must use up
extra space.

it seems that you have a several profiles and some my documents in your
windows.
you can remove other profiles (if you are not interesting from them).
you can remove those profiles by right click on "my computer" icon then
properties, click on advanced then settings besides user profiles and remove
the other users profiles by clicking delete.

XP's search will show a file in its folder and if it resides in a folder
that is a "namespace" (My Documents is such a folder), it may be listed
again in search results. Unless you are seeing distinctly different paths,
the multiples are probably due to how search looks at namespace items.

Also, it's possible search may be showing shortcuts to a file - either real
shortcuts placed by the user or history shortcuts from the Recent folders.
Shortcuts are pointers - links - to an object. While the target object can
be any size (small or large), shortcuts are typically very tiny.

Hi Rick,

There is only one "My Documents" for each user. You will find that this
folder is mirrored in several locations for the user that is actively logged
on, but again there is only one actual folder for each user - changes made
in one will be reflected in the other locations. By design, each user will
have there own separate folder, and also have access to the "shared
documents" folder. The individual ones are under "%userprofile%\<username>
Documents".
