Hi,

I have two routers, one connected to my cable modem (router 1) and one that goes out via a VPN (Router 2) and is connected to Router 1. I would like to share files from devices on router to a computer on router 1.

Router 1: Apple Time Capsule, 192.168.1.1, 255.255.255.0
Router 2: TP-Link Archer C7, 192.168.3.1, 255.255.255.0

the Lan port on Router 1 is connected to the WAN port on router 2.

The idea of having two routers is so that one is a dedicated VPN router so if I connect to that then I am using the VPN but would still like to access files from a computer (192.168.1.7) on Router 1

I thought about having DHCP turned off on router 2 but I don't think that would give me the VPN ability.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

Thanks

If you hook your PC to router 2 and you configure the vpn to allow the 192.168.1.1 network to by pass the vpn (not all routers have that feature) you should be able to have access.

Now if you mean you want to access the pc on router 2 FROM a pc on router 1 that is not really simple and has little to do with the vpn. This is the standard vpn behind vpn.

Best would be if you could replace your main router with the VPN router. If you did not want all devices to pass though the VPN there should be options to allow that.
The whole idea of VPN is to "transport" you to another network, so once you're connected thru VPN, it does not matter whether your PC is next room, or across the globe. Turning DHCP off on second router would make little sense.

One way to "solve" this is to add second NIC to the PC behind the VPN router, and connect it to the primary router, but configuring it with no gateway (so that it is not used for Internet access).
