I have a new computer(XP) and I am trying to transfer files from the
old
(Windows 98) computer. connected by a serial cable.

I made a wizard disk and ran it on the old computer. With the message
"please wait while wizard colllecs your files and settings," it shows
file transfer occurring and a bar which presumably shows how much of
the task is completed gets about three quarters of the way to the end,
and hangs up. The first time I tried this I left it running for
several hours to see if it completed, which it didn't. I tried it a
second time just to see if it worked differently, and it didn't.
Any suggestions?

Have you tried a RJ-45 cross-over cable?
