Final Cut Pro file: can you open it on a PC?

Hi,

Someone sent me what I assume is a Final Cut Pro file -- they were
supposed to send me quicktime, but because they used a MAC there's no
file extension. I'm a PC-user, XP Pro.

In any event, QuickTime Pro tells me "it is a not file that Quick Time
understands."

Before I ask the client to FED-EX me a new CD with a file in a different
format, I thought I'd see if there's some way to access this file
without FCP or a MAC.

I did a couple of Google searches, but didn't find anything.

Any ideas?

Try adding .mov at the end of the name.

That's the first thing I did. No luck.

No.

Not much you can do with it even if you could open it? A project file
simply only references the media for the in and outs to build your time
line.

How large is the file?

Also.. When you ask the for the file again, make sure you ask for "self
contained quicktime file".

And.. Be sure to tell him the CODEC too. Not much you can do with a QT
H.264 file on a PC unless you have a beta version of QT.

4 GB (I meant DVD, not CD), so it appears to be a compiled movie file of
some kind.

In my experience, wouldn't the Quick Time error then say, "Quick time
needs to download software to play this file, but that software isn't
available blah blah blah..." rather than the error I got?

It might be worth checking it with gspot http://www.headbands.com/gspot/
to see it it gives you any clues as to the format.

It's not an AVI file so no luck.

FCP uses it's own format, so you would have
to export the file to Quicktime or AVI.

That's what I thought. Thanks for the advice. I've asked them to compile
a DVD and mail it to me or post a torrent. Shouldn't be any problem with
that.

That's a pretty large file!

Yeah.. It's possible that it might be an H.264 file then. What version
of Quicktime do you have? You won't get an error if you have QT 6,
because it's a new format, not a new CODEC, and requires QT 7.

But, what's odd is that it doesn't have an extension on it. Which leads
me to believe that it's a project file..

But, again, no project file is 4GB either..

So, basically.. I'm stumped. :)

Do you have access to a Mac of any kind? Associations of files are
embedded into the files on Macs. PC's only associate files by the
extension. Looking at the file in file browser with a Mac will tell you
what it opens "with", unless you don't have the right app on that machine.
