Hello,

I just did my first PC build. I am not a total novice nor an expert at this and so I want to ask for input on what the problem might be with my setup.

My Build:

Cooler Master N400 Mid Tower Case
Gigabyte GA-x79 UD3 Motherboard
Intel Core i7-3930k
Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3 2400 (PC3 19200) 2x8GB RAM
Phanteks PH-TC14PE_BK Heatsink Fan
Zotac GTX 780 GPU
Coolmax ZU Series ZU-900B 900W PSU
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
LG Bluray/DVD Driver
AOC LCD Monitor

I connected just the CPU, RAM, GPU, HSF and PSU on the Motherboard just to see if it would get through POST. Powering on gave a single short beep (which is good from what I've learned) and the monitor shows the Motherboard splash screen. I take that to be a good sign that the core components are in working condition.

And so I move on to installing everything in the actual Tower Case.

I successfully install everything including the SSD (which I already know works because I tried it with my other PC, and even installed Windows 7 on it). When I powered the computer on, it still gave the single short beep and showed the Motherboard Splash Screen. It stays on the MOBO screen for about 15 secs and there are other single short beeps occasionally when I leave it on. Then after a while, the MoBo Screen disappears and is replaced with a Black Screen with a blinking text cursor on the upper left corner of the screen. Then it just stays like that. No text pops up.

Next time I turned on the computer I made sure that I connected a USB keyboard so I can access the BIOS screen by pressing the appropriate keys during the MoBo Splash Screen but it does not respond to any keyboard commands and proceeds to do the exact same thing leading to the black screen with the blinking text cursor.

I tried a PS2 keyboard just incase it was the keyboard that was problematic. But the system was still unresponsive and it did the exact same thing.

I decided to take my system apart again and start with the core components : CPU, RAM, GPU, HSF, PSU and MoBo. I made sure there all the connections are plugged in correctly (including the Power Supply cables). Same results.

I took out the 2nd RAM stick and left one in there. Same Results.
Placed the single RAM stick in all the other 4 DIMM slots. Same Results.
Tried replacing it with the second RAM stick and switching DIMM slots. Same Results.
Tried my other RAM stick that was in my working PC. Same Result.
I concluded that either all the DIMM ports are busted or RAM wasn't the issue.

Tried reseating the CPU and the HSF. Same Results.

Tried taking out the MoBO battery for 30 minutes then turning it on again. Same results.

From what I've done so far I think the problem might either be with the Motherboard or the CPU.The MOtherboard was brand new and I made sure I had it tested that it worked before I took it home. As for the CPU, I don't think the Splash Screen would show up or the single beep would sound off if the CPU didn't work. I'm really at a loss for what's wrong or which component is causing the problem. Are there any other tests that I can do to determine if its indeed the MoBo or the CPU thats causing the problem?

By the way, I checked and all my components and from what I've seen they should all be compatible with the motherboard.

What do you guys think? Great insight would be appreciated. Let me know if there are questions.

What do you mean by this? Did they test the motherboard in the store for you and it booted up the BIOS successfully?

Hmmm... my first thought is that your problem is specific to the BIOS. Unfortunate that resetting the CMOS didn't help. Are you able to flash the motherboard at all? Some motherboards have this functionality with a bootable file on a USB using a specific USB port that allows you to flash the BIOS, even without being able to access it. I would try that if your motherboard has the capability.

Yes I had them test it with my processor. I didn't see exactly what they did but when they gave it back to me they said it worked and that they tried it 3 times. Maybe they saw the same thing I saw - the MoBo Splash screen and concluded that it worked.

I cannot access the flash utilities to be able to flash it from there but I still need to check if my motherboard has the capability you talked about.

So, can you get into the BIOS setup at all?

It is possible that when you installed Windows to you SSD in the other system, it loaded drivers and such that are incompatible with your MB. Will it boot to the Windows Install screen if you put the Windows Install disk in the drive?

Nope, I cannot access the BIOS menu at all. All I get is an unresponsive MoBo Splash Screen and a black screen with a blinking text cursor after that.

I tried booting with just the DVD Drive connected and it didn't make any difference.

Yes. I just read through the list and I have indeed done all those tests. I have come across jsc's breadboarding posts and have tried those but to no avail.

So what are the possible causes for the problem?
I tested 3 different ram sticks with it (for each of the individual slots) but the same thing happened.
I assume the video card works because I can atleast see the MoBO screen displayed on the monitor.
I tested the PSU with my other computer and it powered it on just fine.
I also individually tested my SSD and Bluray/DVD drive and they seem to work fine too with my other computer.

Yeah, I took a look at your board on the GIGABYTE's site as well and I didn't see that functionality either. I've actually only seen it on ASUS boards.

You seem to have done some fairly thorough troubleshooting, perhaps someone has further suggestions for you. Beyond that, I would look into swapping in a replacement board first and going from there.

I agree with where he is heading at, I think that's more or less the issue.

A lot of the time when you install SSD they require drivers for it to be seen during installation, if the system it was in before has those drivers which are not compatible with your new system it could easily cause this problem.

You said you can get past the splash screen but unable to load the bios correct? If this is the case have you tried to put in the windows cd and attempt to boot from the disk? Do you know if the bios is set to allow it to boot from cd? or even USB???

And I know its a small chance on this but did you verify you were using a USB 2.0 port and not a 3.0 port? Without drivers installed for 3.0 it wont be recognized by the bios. (normally PS2 would work which gets me to think obviously this isnt your issue) but its worth mentioning.

Like I mentioned, I did try booting up with just the DVD drive (with the Windows CD in it) connected. The SSD wasn't even connected but it yielded the same results. Also I'm not sure how the BIOS is set since I haven't been able to access it at all. I also did research and so did gmkos and confirmed that the motherboard doesn't have the capability to direct boot using USB.

I tried all the USB ports for my USB keyboard (if that's what you were referring to). USB 2.0 and USB3.0 both but they were both unresponsive just like PS2.

Just wanted to mention this cause I think I forgot to write it down with my 1st post. When I boot it without any dvd or hard drive to boot from, it displays the message:

" eboot and elect proper Boot device or nsert Boot edia in selected Boot device and press a key"

That's exactly what it says with the missing letters. When I connect the dvd drive with the Windows 7 Install disk and press a button it just displays the same message.

Do you have another drive you can test with? A standard Sata drive?

So bizarre. If you follow through, let us know the results of the motherboard swap.

Sounds like your BIOS is set to boot from a particular device, probably the HDD, and if it can't find an OS, it won't try a different device. You have GOT to get into the BIOS in order to change the boot order, so that it will look at the CD drive first.

Great! Short of a factory flash or other factory repair, it looks like you were out of options with the board. Glad you figured it out.

I also have this problem I have just changed my case, and I have also put a new CPU fan on when I took the old one off my mobo themal past was all over the processor when I was cleaning the processor I accedently got some on the underside my processor is a 775 so the pins are on the mobo so I cleaned the proessor with some white sprit so I cant emagin that being the problem

my keyboard lights up then its unresponsive this is a ps2 keyboard I have also tried a USB keyboard and it wont let me press any key to get in to the Bios I have tried to build my computer outside my case, take the graphics card out and still get the same position stuck on the splash screen but when I disconnect my ram I get the constant bleeps when I connect it I get nothing when it was working It bleeped at the splash screen however when I disconect my SSD I get past the splash screen saying invalid media but I still cant get in to the bios screen? any answers would be great.

The whole system was working before I put it in the new case

Thanks
