So, I've built one super basic machine before (just to learn the basics for building PCs), and I'm planning on making my first high-performance build. Anyways, I have a few questions to ask you all regarding my hardware choices. By the way my budget is around $1500...

1.) Is a geforce gtx 650 1GB GPU suitable for what I do? I do a lot of programming, a little core gaming, and graphic design/3D Modeling.
2.)Based on the stuff I said about what I use my PC for, is a i7 3770K overkill or should I just go with an i5 3570K?
3.)Is 8GB DDR3 RAM Good enough for my uses?

Thank you guys sooo much!!
Any answer is much appreciated!

Solution

go with the i7.
8GB of RAM will suffice, but with your needs you may want to look into 16GB

what games are you looking to play? that will help decide what GPU you should go with.

I would definitely suggest just going with a 4th gen "Haswell" processor. If you tell me whether you need a keyboard/mouse/monitor/OS then I could give you a build that would be suitable for your needs, which is heavy on programming/modelling and light on gaming, correct?

Well, the new 4th generation i7's consume more power and I want to overclock. So, I want a 3rd Gen because they consume 77W as opposed to 87W. I also heard that the Haswell CPUs run hotter as well which is a downside for me because I don't want to spend crazy money on a CPU cooler!

There's no difference in the cables, It's just marketing crap. Any SATA cable should work at any speed, as long as the wires are not damaged and the contacts are not dirty or oxidized. I'm not just saying SATA II will work for SATA III, I mean ANY SATA cable should work at full SATA III 6Gb/s speeds.

I can't afford the 16GB right off the bat, however would it be okay to eventually buy another of the same 8GB RAM Kit and install it into the other two DIMM Slots? Or would that not work?

thats exactly what you do :)

Thanks again, John!
