I like the specs, with the exception of the SSD and camera.

A 32GB SSD is a little small by they time you install widows 7, and add Office 2007 or 2010 to make it usefull you are very close to the limits of a 32GB SDD. they should make the base model a 64GB drive and the upgraded version a 128GB. that would allow you to store a few movies, MP3's or Ebooks on it with out filling up the drive.

as for the camera, .3 MP? WTF? if they can put an 8MP camera in a cell phone at least put a 3-5MP camera in the "EEEpad".

also the specs don't list the video chipset. I dont want to play crysis on it. but it sould be at least capable of 1080p video playback, and most intigrated chipsets suck at this.

My only other request would be a gigabit ethernet port or a docking staion with a gigbit port to make transfering large files of videos to it faster. granted you can do this with wireless or usb thumb drives. but gigabit ethernet is much faster.

I think this 12' tablet will be very a nice entry level or sketching portable PC for CG artists but in general not so good as a entertainment device. Is very close to a laptop with some advantages and some disadvantages. I believe it has a very specific use, please enlighten me, but as a CG artist and I can't deny is very tempting for me. Maybe next time I will consider a laptop a tablet like this will be my best option. But is to big, it will be expensive and heavy for light use on the internet or watching a movie. Very possible but not to discrete on a flight.

Anything else you might want? Didn't we have Tablet Laptops before the iPad. All of a sudden we want it all again. One of the things that makes the ipad so desirable is because of the things that it can do, not want it can't. Do you think that if it had a Core Dual precessor that it would get 10hrs of battery life. Come on, Office 2007, what kind of typing are you going to do on a touch screen that requires a full blown word processer. If I wanted to do all those things, then a traditional desktop or laptop would fit build. I know that most of us here want to open it up get into what's behind it. Lets put it this way, when you turn your TV on, it just works, you change the channels and they change, you hookup a Blueray/DVD and after SOME changes, it just works. The masses want their things to just work without spending hours or even days to get it just right. I am by no means in to Apple products, but being that they just sold 2million iPads speaks volume. Sometimes I just want to push the button and it work.

I'll agree with you on a lot of your post, but selling 2 million iPads says more about Apple's marketing machine and the consumers than it does about the quality of the iPad. Is it interesting product? Sure. Is it "magical"? Hell no. Does Apple know how to market their products? Yes. They're genius marketers. But don't try to relate the number sold to the quality of the product. Ask Toyota about that.

I have Windows 7 installed with Office 2007, Google Earth and a sketching app I use for work. My total installation size on my 40GB SSD is 7.1GB. 32GB is plenty for this device.

Sure some people want an easy-to-use electronic gadget that allows them to view other people's content. I get that, I have no problem with it.

Some people however want to actually have something they can make stuff on, they want portable digital creativity. More often than not (and especially with widnows excellent handwriting recognition) this doesn't require a keyboard, and tablet would be a much nicer form factor to work on away from home, laptops are ok but unwieldy, netbooks are neither convenient, nor geared towards the creative person.

I think people were excited Apple were building a tablet because of their previous (and now much eroded) links with the creative industries, but alas the ipad is definately not something that has individual creativity at it's heart, Jobs himself said it was perfect for viewing content.

This is why I would welcome a win 7 tablet, with the right specs.

1) SSDs are expensive. Admittedly, they should have gone with a 40gb for the base model, yes, but 64gb for base a 128gb for the upgraded model is a little ridiculous. A 40-80 upgrade is much more sensible in this economy.
2)VGA resolution is perfectly fine for video conferencing. SXGA (1.3MP) would have been preferred, but there is simply no need for 3 megapixels on a tablet. These things aren't meant to take pictures. They are much too big and awkward. All they need to do is deliver good video conferencing. 720p is still pretty (read: much too) taxing to a lot of internet connections imo.
3)There is no need for 1080p playback. All it really needs to be able to do is to be able to play high bitrate video at its native screen resolution. Anything beyond that is pointless unless you are outputting the image via HDMI... even then, it's not that useful since 1080p video (at decent bitrates) takes up WAY too much storage space for an SSD to be used, from a price standpoint.

Not to sound like I'm defending the shitty 0.3MP on here, but a phone needs a 8MP sensor (or even 3MP) as much as a tricycle needs a big block V8. These devices have shitty optics and microscopic pinhole apertures, so increasing the resolution will not get you better image quality past a certain point, and IMO, that's probably in the 1.3-2MP range. For reference, 1080P = ~2.07MP.

I like the idea of laying in bed, watching TV, and sketching away...

[citation][nom]bob_white[/nom]Wow! Core 2 duo, 2GB DD2 Memory, SSD, windows 7Its better than the computer im typing on![/citation]

I had to giggle at this... until i realized it was true for me as well.

Now i am just sad

what I am looking for in a tablet is something light weight, decent screen size and enough storage space to run busniess apps, and have some room left over of video files, mp3, or Ebooks while I am traveling. this tablet fits the bill in every area but one. the big hang up for me is still the size of the SSD. I still stand by the 64 or 128GB SSD or even a 60-8GB hard disk drive.

I have a job that requires that I travel a lot. My company laptop is Dell Latitude D430 and it has 32GB SSD. It has Windows 7 Enterprise and Office 2007 Enterprise, Adobe Pro 9, and a few other odds and ends programs installed. no games or other crapware and about a gig for company documents and files. Just the stuff needed for everyday busniess use, and it takes up 28GB of space. There is simply not enough room on a 32GB SSD for busniess programs and HD video. If they didnt want you to use it for HD video play back, they would not have put an HDMI port on it. I think the reason for the small SSD is not cost, it is because everyone is pushing for cloud computing or trying to find a way to charge you for a online storage subscription. I love ASUS produces, I use thier motherboard in all my PC's and I love my ASUS netbook, and I would love to have this tablet if they upgraded the spec's on the SSD. I still might even buy it, take it apart and upgrade the SSD myself!

The camera is not really a big deal, I just think that 0.3MP is a little low spec for 2010, it would have been fine back in 1998. even a 1.3MP camera would be better than the 0.3.

I would still like a docking station or gigabit port to make loading software or audio/video media to it. but that's not a deal breaker. it would just make easier to use, plugging in a mouse, keyboard, Video cable everytime you neend to use it as a computer is really a pain. like I said before, I am not looking to play games on it. I am looking for a PC I can take with me everywhere and just have it work and when I am traveling I want it to be able to have enough space to store couple of movies, some MP3, or maybe even a few Ebooks, and a 32GB SSD is to small.

don't really see why HD playback necessarily implies that the video playback would be from local storage. With HD now being offered by a lot of websites I think that is the more likely way they expected it to be used.

As for the camera thing, hadn't thought about it and just assumed 0.3 was low, but it makes sense to me now it's explained, if you are looking for making price/performance value there is no point sticking anything bigger on here, as mentioned the thing is to unwieldy to use as a camera for recording your own footage, and therefore its only real purpose is video conferencing, where 720p is fine, especially over a 3G network, you wouldn't really want higher (although this brings in to question its HD playback from net sources). Basically I guess they figured just because we can buy better (and more expensive) camera sensors, doesn't mean this is necessarily the right thing to do, and I kind of agree. No point paying for something you wont use.

With the i3 line around this hardly seems worth it. They could gain usefulness in public places like libraries or airports. Otherwise i really dont see any real usefulness for this.
