Hi!

I'm doing my first overclock on my 5960x.

System
CPU: Intel i7 5960x
CPU Cooler: CoolerMaster Nepton 280L
MB: Asus X99-Pro
GPU: GTX 980Ti
RAM: Corsair Vengeance (8x8gb) 64gb 2133Mhz (XMP to 2400Mhz atm)

So far I've tried 4.2ghz at 1.19v.

Running Prime95:
Package Max: 77 C
Core Max: 54 - 61 C (most cores around the 57 C mark, 2 cores run slightly hotter at 60/61 C)

Idle package temp is 40 C and idle core temp is 20 C.

I have no idea if this is okay, can I push it further, do I need to scale back. I've tried reading about good temps but can't seem to find a great answer among some conflicting information.

The speed also seems to be pinned to 4.2GHz regardless of my usage, whereas before the overclock it would fluctuate lower than its base depending on what I was doing. is this normal?

Thanks!

Solution
Thats pretty good temps!

I don't like the CPU to go above 80°c under full load, its a good general rule of thumb but the "upper limit" will vary from CPU to CPU.

Oh okay that's good. I haven't quite tested how far I can push that voltage down before it becomes unstable either.

One thing I noticed was that some people are increasing the bus strap to 1.25 and then one had a multiple of 38 for a total of 4.75GHz (I know I won't be able to reach that with my cooling) but is that something I should look into trying as well? Like why do that over 47 x 100 for example

I guess the other thing to mention is it's the middle of summer and the days here can get to 45 C lol. It's not too bad in the room I'm in, but definitely not cool.

EDIT:
I've just tried doing an oc of 1.2v 1.25 x 33 (4.125GHz) and increasing RAM to 3000MHz.
Running Prime95 the temps were:
Package Max: 86C (appeared to be still slowly rising)
Core Max: 61 - 72 (screw you core 4 :( )

So this seems to be past the limits of my cooler I guess, unless this is still acceptable.
