(This build is meant for mainly gaming, and some editing)
Note: games like Sc2, Possibly BF3-4, planetside, on at least high at a good fps.
So I have been researching for.... well a decent amount of time. Probably not as much as I could be, but thats what these cites are for aye? So my budget is around $1000 it could probably fluctuate within 1-200 dollars if need be. I got several of these parts from someone else's build, but Im not trying to be unique with my build, just get a good solid computer.
But so far I have these specs, if their are different items that are better, or even cheaper that you suggest, please do so.
CPU: Intel Core i5-4670K 3.4GHz Quad-Core
CPU Cooler (optional?) Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO 82.9 CFM Sleeve Bearing
Motherboard:Asus Z87-PRO ATX LGA1150
Memory: G.Skill Trident X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) DDR3-2400
Storage: Sandisk Extreme 120GB 2.5" SSD
Western Digital Caviar Black 1TB 3.5" 7200RPM
GPU: EVGA GeForce GTX 770 2GB
Case: NZXT Phantom 410 ATX Mid Tower
PSU: EVGA 750W ATX12V / EPS12V
Optical Drive: LG GH24NS95 DVD/CD Writer
Operating System: Windows 7 (64)
So my end questions are; Is this CPU great for the cost? Or could I go with a lower model for less money? Do I really need the CPU cooler? Also I know the SSD is helpful for loading in games etc. But as an avid gamer should I keep this? Im guessing.. yes? The motherboard, and PSU are the main things Im unsure about, so if I could go cheaper with those especially, but, anyway input is greatly appreciated. Thanks!
In my opinion an avid gamer doesn't need an ssd. It's mostly for speed freaks who need the fastest loads time, it won't change your gaming experience one bit. That said it can still be great for loading stuff lightning quick, and makes windows feel faster. The CPU is great BUT if you don't want to overclock (making the cpu ghz higher) than you don't need the aftermarket cooler because the cpu comes with a fine cooler for non overclockers. I would suggest this cpu if you don't want to overclock:
http://www.amazon.com/Intel-i5-4570-Quad-Core-Processor-BX80646I54570/dp/B00CO8TA4I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383436550&sr=8-1&keywords=4570 Cheaper and no real performance loss. The PSU could go down to 600 watts, and I would suggest a corsair or a seasonic power supply, but that's more opinion. The motherboard is great and will work with your CPU and the CPU I suggested, but if you don't want to overclock I can give you some suggestions on a motherboard.
Yea, I heard the SSD is for making loading games very fast. So I figured if it's in my budget, why not, if it isn't then no loss. As for the CPU I may not overclock right away, but I feel like I would in the future, what would you suggest. I mean in cases where I may want to run at a higher setting, or something along the line it would be good to have that. What would you suggest I do? Would the CPU you suggested let me still overclock? Or is that not compatible? As for the PSU lowering the watts, would that effect anything unless I get a second GPU (which im not) As for the motherboard, I dont plan on adding any GPU's, I might, but it would be distant future. Any motherboard suggestions that would allow crossfire if I ever did, and cheaper then the 170$ listed above?
Well, if you were to go with the 770 you would want an SLI motherboard crossfire is the AMD equivalent. But the cheapest SLI mobo with OC support and with decent reviews is $140, it's better than $170 but your board you listed has built in wi-fi and really is a fantastic board overall, so I would stick with it. And the cpu I suggested does NOT support overclocking, little tip, with intel only cpus with a K at the end are overclock compatible. If you want to overclock you do need to get the CPU cooler, but one thing I suggest is ditch the ssd and get a GTX 780, they run for $500 so, even without the SSD it will cost you around an extra $80 or so, but this video shows the difference between it and the 770
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQAbBU43mpo Plus, the 780 comes with 3GB of VRAM so a little more future proof there. And even with a 780 a 600 watt PSU will be fine. But if you do plan on ever adding another one of those beasts, I would go with a 750 watt PSU. Hope this helps, also sorry about crappy sentence structure
Don't worry about your sentences, ha. hmm, I don't know about the 780, Ill probably stick with the 770 it still looks like solid card, and thanks for the tip about what can overclock. But if I would pretty much stay with what is listed above would that run several games on ultra with a decent fps? Any specifics? I was mainly looking for a decrease in value, as I have calculated the price to be somewhere around $1250ish area. But if not I should be able to scrap the money together, if not possibly get some extra cash for Christmas. But thanks for the help. It's helping me understand more.
Alright, one thing is I would go with 1600 mhz ram instead, as 2400 mhz you can't see the difference as far as performance wise. And the 770 is a beast of a card and should serve you well for years to come on high or above at smooth 60 fps. Also the 770 comes with 3 free games until the 28th I believe, you can read more here: http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/articles/announcing-the-geforce-gtx-holiday-bundle-featuring-heroes-pirates-and-spies
I know Im super excited, Im planning on ordering before the offer ends! Thanks for the link, I didn't know what games were either! And thanks for the info as well, if you recommend the 1600hz over the 2400hz why is the 1600hz more money? I looked it up and it's more money.. Maybe I looked up the wrong RAM. As for the SSD honestly I feel like the extra $200 is not necessary, besides loading games faster, the SSD won't effect fps or anything correct? One more thing, would the Asus Z87-PLUS DDR3 1600 LGA 1150 Motherboard be compatible with the rest of my build? Because it's 40-50$ cheaper I believe. But Im stoked to get this together and start playing!
The board you chose is excellent, same board except no built in wi-fi, you can buy a wi-fi adapter and it will work just fine, any LGA 1150 socket motherboard will work with the 4xxx series of intel cpus.
Also it seems there's two versions, one with an M in it. Don't get that one. Get this one
http://www.amazon.com/Asus-Z87-PLUS-DDR3-1600-Motherboard/dp/B00CRJSX5Q/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383451342&sr=8-1&keywords=Asus+z87+plus
And the SSD doesn't change a damn thing except bootup times ( and game loading times if you install games on ti) and might make your OS "snappier" but really, if you've never used an SSD you won't notice a thing.
The RAM I looked at had around a $20 difference between 1600 and 2400, but if you want 2400 mhz ram, go for it because, the price difference is so small it doesn't really matter as long as it's a good brand.
Hope I helped, good luck mate!
Oh, and if you want a good tutorial on how to put a pc together this guy goes over everything you need to know.
