First time ever building a PC, could you give me idea if I'm doing good?

Hi guys,

My apologies if I sound newbish or posted it within the wrong category, but I'd like my decision on a build rated, commented on, criticised, call it however you want. I do this because maybe you could suggest some better parts or where I could for example save some money on.

What I am going for is a high-end gaming PC that can run pretty much any game on Ultra High/Very High settings.

Here's the list of my choices:
i5 4690K CPU
Asus Z97-A ATX LGA 1150 Motherboard
Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM
Crucial MX100 256GB SATA 2.5-Inch Internal SSD
WD 1TB HDD: 3.5-Inc, SATA 6Gb/s, 7200RPM HDD
MSI GeForce 970 GTX 4GB Gaming Edition GPU
Obsidian Series 450D Mid Tower Case
EVGA 220-G2-0750-XR 80 Plus Gold 750W PSU
ViewSonic VX2270SMH-LED 22-Inch 1080P Monitor
Logitech G502 Proteus Core Mouse
Simple comfortable keyboard (nothing special)

Now the only thing I'm bothered with is cooling. I cannot seem to figure out what would be the best cooling solution for my system. What would fit properly and would keep it cool? I'm not going for epic overclocking (maybe a little bit, but not over 4.0GHz most likely).

Thanks and if there's any other info you need please post!

Dan

My current budget would be around $1800 I guess. What do you think I could save some money on? Thank you for the cooler advice!

i would recomend a Intel I5 6600K, its not much more expensive, only like 20 bucks i think, and it performs way better, but you will need a lga 1151 socket motherboard then, this is the one im using MSI Z170A GAMING PRO, its a briliant motherboard, and its fits perfect with your pc, so my recomendation, get a MSI Z170A GAMING PRO motherboard, and a 6600K CPU, a way better option for gaming

If go with a skylake cpu, you will need ddr4 ram. Apparently ddr3 ram literally frys skylake cpus. Ur i5 4690k is still killer though, but if its in your budget, go skylake. Also, if you plan on multitasking, maybe go with AMD. Single core performance is worse, but some have 8 cores for around 150 I believe.

I do NOT recommend Skylake. There's no noticeable performance increase over a Broadwell or Haswell i5. The only huge performance increase is with i7.

And OP, your build's fine, only that I would spend $10 more for a VX228H which is more reliable and has a much faster respons time (1ms).

This is kind of a weird time in the CPU world - Skylake is new, doesn't offer anything more than Haswell except a couple of new technologies you could easily do without. Haswell is still around and doesn't appear to be going anywhere, and Haswell-E runs at about the same price as Skylake. It's kind of a pick-your-poison kind of deal.

Well yeah the voltages won't match. DDR4 is much lower voltage - 1.2V compared with DDR3 which runs at 1.5V. Also the 288 pin form won't fit the 240 pin form factor of DDR3. Some of the lower end, non overclock Skylake motherboards support DDR3, but it's kind of pointless.

On $1800? You could easily get an i7, 16GB of RAM and a GTX 980TI - more than enough for the latest tech like 4K and VR - and still have room left in the budget for an OS license:

Ya Ik there isn't a difference, I even kept saying this on another forum. But, if its in ur budget, I would go for newer, for better drivers and such. If ur budget is high, go for it. There really isn a difference though.

Not worth. That's why I pretty much never recommend Skylake. For the same price, like g-unit said, you can go for X99, and at lower price you can get Haswell. And I won't really go for new technology over much higher price for no price/performance retribution.
