So I was just checking out the r9 390x and apparently the vbios is online and downloadable and people are flashing it on there 290x. So I was wondering is this advisable, will it work and if it does how do i go about it? I don't want to brick my card and in all honesty I'm very happy with the 290x performance. But if I can get a free performance boost then I will be on board ha. I have the 290x tri x oc edition 4gb

Solution

The bios switch is located next to where the crossfire fingers used to be, the switch is really small and can be easily missed.

You can see the switch in this pic, it's in the center of the pic on the edge of the board next to the screw.
As long as your card has the dual bios switch (assuming both bios still work) there is literally zero chance of bricking the card.

Make a backup of the original bios using GPU-Z.
Flash the bios with the new one you wish to use.
If it fails simply switch over to the second bios and you are good to go again, once in windows simply back to the first bios that is bricked bios and re-flash the original back back.

Here's a guide on how to flash the bios:

It it is not broken do not try to fix it...What ever might happen will happen-Murphies Law.

Yeah guess so. I'm familiar with flashing roms ect on my s4 but this is a different kettle of fish. My pc is my baby and I will be devastated if I brick it. Think I will pass for now till afew more people have tried and tested

i wouldnt think doing that would be a great idea

the newer card should be 8gb shouldnt it? the older card isnt think that alone may cause issues

got any links saying they successfully flashed it and managed to benchmark it?

and more importantly get a performance increase by doing it?

I have actually flashed the bios on my xfx r9 290 and got MORE points in firestrike. It is still recognized as a 290 but the bios says grenada and it somehow shows that it would have 8gb of memory now.

Just remember it doesn't actually have 8GB of memory, the physical memory chips aren't there, unless of course you have the 290x 8GB model.
It's detecting 8GB of memory because that's what's written in the bios.

i was testing at 1180/1550 and i got around 300 points more. But also have changed to windows 10 preview, so not much but a little bit more. I am also waiting for more bioses to pop up so i can test some more
