Version 3.4.3

You hit the chickatrice! the chickatrice turns to flee!
<I wander around for a couple of turns>
The chickatrice misses. The chickatrice touches you!
You caitiff! You kill the chickatrice!

A "fleeing" creature attacks me and I am penalized for defending myself!
What is a poor Knight to do to maintain alignment?

Did you corner it? IIRC fleeing monsters still attack you if you stand
next to them and they have no obvious way of escape. This doesn't set
the mavenge flag like stealing would, and unfortunately there is no
'agressor' flag to keep track of who attacked you in the last turn.

use a stethoscope, a wand of probing, kill a few infidels (that 1 point
alignment hit is barely noticable to non-pacifists) or convert.

It could move but not away from me - we were in a T junction in maze . I
tried to go around it.

too tedious with the number that I'm getting and I ahven't got one anyway.

too wasteful

as I say I'm getting quite a few and anyway I'm trying to be good.

I usually prefer to play chaotic but I thought I would try a lawful knight
for a change.

Don't worry. The alignment hit is trivial.
