Hi Pete;
I'm seriously looking into the o/o defrag program. Tell me, what options
on their interface would be best for me? The prime use of the computer
is the simulator. I have little else installed except OE and IE for the
newsgroups. Naturally I use My Documents for data storage.

From what I gather from the help file, the best option for both your
Windows drive and your FS2004 drive is the "COMPLETE/Name" defragmentation
option.

This option is stated as such because both of these drives (assuming you
have the FS2004 separate from Windows) contain a majority of files that
change relatively infrequently. By contrast, if your drive contained files
that changed a lot, for example a database file structure, the best
defragmentation option would be the one that places files by access date
(The "COMPLETE/Access" option).

Thanks Pete. I just downloaded it. I'll try it tonight.

You are welcome.

Post your results. I am curious if you find any improvements.

Hi Pete;
Defraged finished. Selected by name as you suggested ; results showing
100% and no fragmentation at all....0!

Assuming you have FS2004 on a separate drive and you do not uninstall or
install any large add-on (scenery mesh comes to mind), it should remain
that way for quite awhile.

Now, I'd be interested in reading about your experiences going back to
Philly with the airport environment upgrade installed. Was there any
noticeable change there?

Yes. Phila International looked beautiful. The piers were redone. There
were signs on the doors, chairs visible through the windows, and the
lighting was very good and realistic.
I was disappointed I couldn't keep this program installed. I think it
simply conflicts somehow with the programming for the Spitfire. I did
notice that when loading it into the textures folder, I had to overwrite
many files. I had simply backed up the entire texture folder on the
desktop, and when I deleted the revised texture folder and replaced it
with the original, the stuttering stopped and everything was normal
again.
One personal note. I actually didn't like the revised hard surface ramp
textures. They were way too light, and in an effort of make the cracks
more realistic, I think he went a bit overboard.
Keep in mind, there are simply my personal observations. Your opinion
might differ of course.
As for the computer config and FS9, I don't have my HD's partitioned. I
just went out and bought the most expensive and fastest computer I could
find and loaded the simulator into it. Basically, it runs fine. I could
probably tweak it and make it better, but don't have all that much time
to fool with it. I keep it fairly clean for testing new flight models
for developers, so third party software like the airport enhancements is
either a straight forward go in no problem thing or I take it out
immediately. In this case, it was causing an issue that was a no go for
me.
The defrag program seems like a must. There seems to be some talk that
another defrag program out there is the best for XP from Raxco called
Perfect Disk. I'm looking at that one as well.
