Long story short, I have bought a new insignia tv that has an spdif output on it. I connected this to my computer, and the spdif to a 5.1 stereo. Even when the tv is set to have a raw output of the audio signal coming from the hdmi, windows still only allows me to select the tv audio (going to the tv through hdmi) as a two channel system, even though the tv's speakers are also shut off. In this case, is it possible to force windows to output 5.1 audio to what it thinks is a 2 channel receiver. It will pass the surround sound through to the stereo (tested with other game consoles and what not) but I can't seem to get windows to output the full 5.1.
If anyone has any knowledge on this, it would be helpful because it is irritating that I have nearly the perfect setup, except for the true 5.1 I am trying to get out of the computer. Secondly, I don't want to run the spdif directly to the computer because I have the two connected through a thirty foot (powered) hdmi cord, and thus don't want to run any additional wires between the two.
