Yes, google Offline NT Password Registry editor. You'll need to burn it to a disk but it comes with step by step instructions on how to reset the password for Windows XP. I've had to use it a few times on a family member's PC.

te100 is quite right and besides taht, the length of time it would take to update a two year old XP installation, XP would be out of suppor by then. Buy Windows 7 and install over the existing system. That way, if it doesn't your data, they keep their confidentiality in death.
