I stand by my (admittedly trollish) comment. Being poor and destitute makes you happy to have a job (see medieval Europe), but it doesn't make the job good, or a crime against humanity, or generally despicable.
And I'm aware that their (reported) suicide rate is about on par with the rest of the country- many of their fellow citizens work in similar conditions.
I'm a big tech nerd and buy a lot of computer parts so I'm no one to point fingers, but I think we should be doing something about this sort of stuff- not excusing it.

I would be looking into exposure to neurological agents

(i.e. Exposure to industrial chemicals and heavy metals).

Also ... Psycho-acoustics ... VLF sound which may come from indutrial equipment, excavations, HVAC resonance, etc.

And, let us not rule out even microwave (band) and other EMF emmisions in the campus/plant environment.


Finally. Proper diet, nutrition, and work-vs.-sleep habits and even sunshine and recreation.

Unfortunately this makes me even less inclined to purchase from Foxconn. It's been proven that unhappy workers generally make lower quaility parts and care little about doing the job right.

This whole mess reeks of foul play. There's been reports of Foxconn's internal security division illegally searching, beating, and questioning employees over a missing iPhone prototype. This is also the same company that a few months ago assaulted reporters that were taking pictures of a factory that produces parts for Apple.

Who stabs them self before jumping 12 stories off a balcony? Sorry this story riddled with inconsistencies. The heavy hand of Apple and its secrecy at all costs mentality reaches far.

There are only a few rational people posting comments on here. The rest are absolute idiots. This article was also poorly written too. There was no mention or hints by the writer of the possible reasons for why the workers were committing suicide. Hmmm, if you know anything about China's welfare system, you know that most U.S. companies' subsidiaries working in China fail to register workers at the local government, making gathering social security or welfare impossible for them. The Chinese government provides what is called a living wage to people making only a minimum wage, barely able to support themselves and any any dependents. This may not have been enough for these workers. One possibility is that single work-related deaths amount to nothing and the subsidiary of Foxcon wouldn't have complied with the 1995 Labor law, stipulating that the company must provide for the welfare of the family if the provider dies in a work-related death due to an unsafe working environment. This is because local labor department officials, in charge of inspecting the company sites to insure safety regulations are respected, are often paid off by the management of such companies. Or, they are told by their labor department superiors to turn a blind eye to it. Thus, the people may have sadly figured that the best chance their dependents had of getting restitution or welfare from the company was to kill themselves, garner media attention, and then Foxcon would have made sure they were taken care of.
