Question FPS dropped in every game

Hi everyone,

First time posting on here so if theres something wrong please let me know.

My friend build me this PC 1 year ago: AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D 4.2 GHz 8-Core Processor - Deepcool LS520 SE 85.85 CFM Liquid CPU Cooler - Gigabyte B650 AORUS ELITE AX ATX AM5 Motherboard - G.Skill Flare X5 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR5-6000 CL36 Memory - Samsung 990 Pro 2 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive - Asus TUF GAMING OC GeForce RTX 3060 Ti 8 GB Video Card -Thermaltake Toughpower GF1 PE 850 W 80+ Gold Certified Fully Modular ATX Power Supply

Since then, it has been running completely fine. Recently, I bought a new 4070 Super, and after I installed it, everything was great for a few days. However, two days ago, every game I played suddenly dropped to 15–30 FPS. I tried reinstalling the driver and looked up everything I could find on the internet, but nothing worked.

I decided to reinstall Windows 11, and things went back to normal—until today. Once again, every game I play drops to 15–30 FPS. I ran a benchmark, and the score came out normal.

I have no idea what is going on. If anyone has experienced this issue and knows how to fix it, I’d appreciate your help. Thanks in advance!

How soon would frames start to drop in games? Is it like half hr to an hr or immediately? What games and benchmark?

After reinstalling Windows, was anything else installed along the way after it was running fine until it didn't?

Im wondering maybe Win11 is installing updates to drivers or peripherals automatically. Can disable that but if it is something like this you'd have to reinstall Windows again and disable automatic device driver installation asap.

If it were temp related, benchmark would suffer too but check anyway. And check graphics card bus interface is reporting correctly with gpuz. See also if you get the same fps drops with igpu.

Thanks for the reply.

How soon would frames start to drop in games? Immediately. For example, Wuthering Waves runs at 30 FPS from the start, Warhammer Darktide performs the same as Wuthering Waves, and Dota 2 drops to 15–30 FPS when spamming skills in the demo.

I use the Unigine Superposition Benchmark, and my score is around 25,000 at 1080p with high settings.

After reinstalling Windows, I only downloaded games. Everything was completely fine yesterday, and I could play all of the above games smoothly.

However, Windows 11 seems to be automatically installing updates for drivers or peripherals. If necessary, I plan to reinstall Windows again and will follow the guide provided.

I’m not sure how to respond to your last guidance, but here are the benchmark results from two days ago and today.

Im not on twitter it's asking for sign in to view.

With Hwinfo64 to monitor temps for everything. Core Temp and gpuz are other simpler temp monitoring tools if Hwinfo64 is a bit overwhelming. Gpuz also shows pcie bus interface for the graphics card, where the question mark is on the main page of the program.

As far as trying igpu, that requires you to remove graphics card and see if you get the same fps drops. Poorer performance i know but if fps drops are the same and surely igpu can do better than 15~30fps in some of those titles, then that'll hopefully rule out 4070s being the problem.

Ah, I misread 'if it were temp-related.' The benchmark results show that the maximum temperature is less than 60. I was also monitoring the benchmark progress with MSI Afterburner and observed that the temperature remained below 60 the entire time.
I just downloaded gpu-z and tried to look at it while running benchmark, but it does not let me alt+tab out.

I don't know how accurate monitoring power usage is. Set NvidiaCP to prefer maximum performance.

How are you powering the card, how many pcie cables? Im not sure if pcie cables supplied with power supply has 2x 6+2 ends or just one, you'd typically use 2 seperate cables to the 12vhpwr adapter.

Might be a power issue but 4070s is quite efficient and would've been an issue from the get go not a gradual worsening ordeal.

I bought this random cable at first : https://a.co/d/9DPcR3A.
But then one of my friends told me to buy something compatible with the PSU I have, so I ended up buying and using this one.: https://a.co/d/cG0v7Se.
I set Nvidia Control Panel to prefer maximum performance. When I open any game, the power usage stays at 40W with low FPS. However, in Dota 2, when I start spamming skills in the demo, the power usage increases, and I get the normal FPS I usually experience. But when I stand still or idle, the power usage drops back to 40W, and the FPS also drops.

I just plugged both 8-pin connectors into the PSU, and everything works fine now.
I just don’t understand how I was still getting high FPS even though I had only plugged in one 8-pin connector to the PSU for the past few days. Haha, I feel like an idiot :'(
