I recently rma'ed a cpu because any sort of fpu stress test would make the computer shut off.
Prime95 blender ran for a minute, and aida64 (just fpu) would instantly shut off.

Is it possible for a single operation of a cpu to be broken?
Coudl this just be overheating? Normal stress tests did bring the cpu to 70c on stock cooler with artic silver...

Total shut off may indicate a power supply issue. CPU issues tend to result in blue screens, overheating can either result in a full shut off or throttling, but a PSU issue tends to result in the system coming to a sudden off state.

What power supply do you have? Does a GPU stress test make your system shut down too?

LGA 755, I know how to install these xD so simple they pracicaly snap in place then twist and lock.
E5700 3.0ghz 800fsb ddr3-1333@800(was planing to overclock =.=)
gtx 460
PSU 500W

Oh trust me I redid it and each time it got worse, one little grain of rice in the center.
I first used the stock grease, then ceramic, then silver. (each time firmly placing the fan and trying different orientations)
I think something was wrong with proc, because each time, stress testing would make core #1 approx 20c higher than core #2, and i set my computer to shut off at 75c, and to limit speed at 70c, lol.
I then went and played sc2, and got beeps half way through a game with lag, xD.
I ram'ed it, its history now i guess.

Nope. GFX stress did nothing, my psu is well within what I would need.
Playing games was fine, any stress test was fine. JUST fpu stress.
