I am a newbie building my first computer and I am unsure of what OS to use. I can get 2000 pro for free and upgrade later once I have more money or pay 100 and get xp home. Will it be a hassle to upgrade, or should I save myself the hassle and get xp now? Here are my current specs:

xp2000
asus a7n8x deluxe
512mb ddr
80gb 7200rpm 8mb cache western digital
16x dvd drive
gf4 ti 4200 64mb

Windows 2000 for free? I'd definitely go for that. If you do need to upgrade to Windows XP, you should most likely do a clean install, anyways.

May I ask, how on earth did you manage to get 2 free copies of XP Pro from Microsoft? How can I get in with that deal? Would you please let me in on some info? If you want, you can send me a private message to let me know.

Thanks!

There's a number of ways. I got it free by going to their retail seminars. I don't work in retail anymore but still go. I've been doing it for years and basically have gotten every OS, office, many games, encarta, etc etc for free.

The only problem is that you recieve the software a few weeks before it's actually released. So if they make a last minute change you're kinda screwed. They decided at the last minute to abort on the subscription based software for WinXP and OfficeXP, so although I got a good copy of WinXP Pro, my copy of OfficeXP is subscription based and I don't use it.

So, how do I (or anyone else for that matter) get in on the seminars? You know, I am all for anything free (for the most part).

Work at one of the computer or technology retail stores in the US. They'll post info in the breakroom most likely. Then you sign up on the web, and from that point on Microsoft will send you an e-mail about their events.
