Hello, I currently have a dual monitor set up for my personal computer. Works great no problems when I am attached to my R9 270 graphic card. One monitor is hooked up by HDMI and one is DVI.

My issue is when I hook up my work laptop. The newer monitor that is hooked through HDMI works just fine but my older monitor says "frequency out of range". The laptop has a Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000.

I sort of understand that the frequency is not correct, but don't understand how it works on my PC and not my laptop. Or how to change it to make it work.

The laptop is using a mini HDMI cord that is then plugged into a splitter.
Then two HDMI cords are hooked up to switches that then are hooked up to the PC and monitors.

Kinda confused here.

First off are you trying to hook up more than one extra monitor so your laptop? I can only support two monitors. One of them being the laptop screen itself.

If you are having the other two show the same thing, but just have a splitter like you said then they should work. Are the two monitors different or the same?

Hi, currently at work I am able to hook it up to 2 monitors + the laptop screen. I would be doing the same thing at home.

The monitors are not the same. One is a ASUS that I just bought a week ago and the other is a Gateway that is older. The ASUS monitor works but not the Gateway.

ASUS VE228H
Gateway FPD1975W

Laptop is a Dell E6430s
my desktop has a R9 270 card

I also thought that could be the problem, since resolution capabilities are not the same for both monitors. Though what confuses me is that on my desktop both monitors work but not on the laptop. But then again the laptop only has 1 video output that is getting split while the desktop has 3 video outputs.

Yea it probably is. Also note that using the HDMI Splitter will NOT give you 3 seperate monitors though. It will only make those two show the same thing. Any kind of intergraded graphics can only run two monitors with out the use of a second video card which in the case of a laptop is impossible. Unless you had a high end gaming laptop that had support for 3 monitors, where as on a laptop two of the 3 monitors WILL show the same thing and there isn't anything you can do about it.

The gateway has a 1440x900 mas where as the ASUS is 1920x1080 so if you went into the resloution settings, changed it to the 1440x900 you will see those two monitors will show the same thing.

I'll check that out. So my question is why I am able to use 3 monitors at work?

At work the set up is using a dock which utilizes the USB to connect to the dock.
The dock has a HDMI that has a adapter to DVI
Also has a DVI that has an adapter to VGA

Is there something I can do to mimic this without the dock?

Ahhh yes yes. Since it is a USB Connection to the Dock it self and then you use a VGA and DVI out of the dock it is NOT using the internal video card to run those two extra monitors but though the USB which then runs the two monitors. If you were go get another doc, set it up at home, it would work just like that.
