I am doing a fesh install of Win 7 from a pre-SP1 DVD.

The last time I did this, Windows update dowloaded and installed literally hundreds of patches before and after SP1, taking hours.

How can skip to SP1 and avoide downloading all of those unnecessary patches?

I am installing to SSD, so in additional to saving time, I also want to minize space

Thank you.

here's a download page for windows 7 sp1 and other updates

also read:

the download link has links to .iso image and other updates. read the kb article too. excerpt:
Step 3: Visit Windows Update and Install Windows Updates KB2454826, KB2534366, or KB2533552 if offered
Run Windows Update and if you are offered the option to install update KB2454826, KB2534366, or KB2533552, install them. If you install the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center and do not install these updates, you could encounter a Stop error in Windows in rare cases.

These updates will automatically be installed when you install the service pack by using Windows Update. However, these updates are not automatically installed when you install the service pack from the Microsoft Download Center.

If you can borrow a sp1 dvd, you could use that to install, and activate with your own activation code.

But, Installing to a ssd will be much quicker. So much so that I would not bother to do anything special unless you have a very slow download capability.
