Hello Gurus!

I am not so familiar with partitions and the like so please bear with me on this issue.

I have upgraded to windows 10 and in my system info it tells me the license is acivated.

I am trying to do a fresh install of Win 10 on my SSD but when I get to the boot-up stage using a USB and media creation tool - choosing to do a complete reinstall without keeping any files, i get an 'error'.

When I get to the stage where I must choose where to install Win 10 I have around 6 or seven options but none are valid for installing. I want to install to the SSD only

I have a seperate HDD of 1TB that is partitioned. this HDD is solely used for large file storage such as movies and pictures. I have resently upgraded to Samsung magician 4.7 but I also tried deleting magician as I thought the 'over provisioning' partition might be why I couldnt install Win 10. This made no difference.

So the error I get is:

Windows cant be installed on drive 0 partition 2 selected disc has MBR partition table. On EFI systerms Win can only be installed to GPT disks.

Would I just be better off doing a secure erase of my SSD with the magician software? Would this even solve the problem?

I have no idea what this means and quiete frankly I am in the middle of moving house and lots of other stuff, I dont have the time to spend doing research and I would like to resolve it before my metered internet resets itself in a few days. I have large files to d-load, important files such as BF4 and Starwars Battlefront, Sssshhh....dont tell my wife :)

I very much look forward to your replies!! I will have my email live so I can answer/read replies.

Many thanks indeed for any help offered!!

Sorry, I might not put my answer straight. It is not that the ssd doesn't support UEFI. When you initialize the brand new SSD, Windows will ask you to set is as MBR(not support UEFI) or GPT disk(support). To solve this problem, you can either convert the SSD to GPT or enable Legacy boot mode in BIOS.
First go to the DOS command prompt (It has to be running in administrator mode, it will ask you later anyway.)
Type in: list disk. It will make a listing of all the drives connected to your computer in a number order.
Type in: sel disk. (Select disk) command will allow you to choose which disk drive you want to change. Make sure you chose the right one. It will also tell you which one is GPT.
Type in: clean. This erases everything making the whole drive unallocated.
Type in: exit. This closes the command prompt, and returns you to windows.

From there you have to go to control panel\administrative tools\computer management\storage\disk management\
You'll see the unallocated drive you just wiped out. You create volume, and format the drive.

I would disconnect your big drive so you don't accidentally erase the partition and loose your information. GPT is the new partition for EFI system boards.

Hi Lantrich. Forgive me but if I delete everything on the SSD where the OS win 10 is installed how can i then go to control panel without having aan OS?

Forgive my manners I am rushing around like crazy and I cant solve this really irritating install issue 🙁

Many thanks for your reply!

I just tried the list disk commandand the sel disk command and cmd is telling me that they are not recognised commands

PS: I have no administrative tools in control panel

However I appeare to have admin privs

The process I gave you is for a new hard drive that you are not using yet for a system drive. You do know that a fresh install of windows is going to wipe your hard drive clean and you may have to buy a new key. When you have to change the partition type you have no option but to wipe the partition away. There is a free program called Aomei partition manager. It should be able to delete your partition. Then windows can set up the new GPT partition.

Hi Lantrich.

I think maybe there has been some confusion. The 'partition' was not created by me it was created for 'over provisioning purposes by default by samsung magician.

But I am using the SSD it has windows 10 on, I upgraded from 8.1! I want to do a fresh install of windows 10. No I do not have to buy a new key because, as I said it is activated already. If you understood the upgrade process and how to install using the media creation tool then you would know I would have to have a product key or an activated version of Win 10.

Solution

I fixed my problems (HP EliteBook 8440p) by going in to the BIOS Setup (<Esc> at startup then <F10>) and choosing
System Configuration >> Device Configurations >> SATA Device Mode >> AHCI (was set to RAID)

Hope that helps someone

Figured it out!!!!!! When it's showing the partions, delete ALL OF THEM. Then format, then it should say theres only 1 drive unallocated space. Then you should be able to install
