Friends PC won't launch some games

So, to not be long winded, I'll just give the main points.

I always have friends that want their PC's checked, because in my area, I'm like "the PC guy" because I'm the only one around that has built a PC, and understands the basics of PC's (though I am not an expert, I basically just know a little more than the average person). But this one has stumped me yet again.

My friends PC is older, not ancient, but older. But It's running a GTX 560 ti for example, and I forget which CPU, but I know it's an older Intel model.

So, he's been having issues with it in terms of games.

He installs a game, everything goes fine. But after installation, whenever he goes to launch it, it will give him an error. It happens with MOST games, and the errors are always different.

Although it works on SOME games. For example, hawken runs just fine. But any of the newer games that I personally play (That he has installed to play with me) don't work at all.

In fact he has uninstalled at least one of these games, and reinstalled, only to get the same error as before.

One of the errors for example is a C++ runtime error. However, I made sure to double check, his is completely up to date. In fact so are pretty much all his drivers. At least the main ones, like chipset, and GPU.

This problem also seems to effect other things. Like windows update. Every time he runs it, it will attempt to update, but then randomly fail to update, every time.

Not sure what's causing this. Any suggestions would be very helpful.

The problem is caused by visual studio software . Modern games have a folder with the visual c installer which will try to install itself as you install the game.
Unfortunately other programs previously installing versions of the software stop the newer visual c from installing .
Its possible to google "visual studio" and obtain the versions you will need and the removal/repair tools are available too.
You can check which versions are being used by checking in control panel /add remove ,they should be in the lists. There is a load of versions from different years etc . Good luck.

Sorry I forgot to add some of those details.

We're downloading these games MOSTLY from steam, and some of them (Such as dreadnought) from the developers website (greybox in the case of dreadnought).

Speaking of steam, we have gone as far as to Validate the games, and everything said it was fine during that.

Also, he's using Windows 7 Premium. Which, actually brings up another problem. He has the upgrade to Windows 10, however, everytime he uses the windows 10 upgrade assistant, it freezes on 99% and won't install windows 10.

Thank you Yamitime, I will try that, as I did notice he had a few different versions, anywhere from 2013 to 2015, and 2015 is the one giving him a runtime error.

Any ideas on why his PC won't install windows 10? Or why the updater for 7 seems to not work?

His networking is fine, he's using a Wifi adapter, but that seems to be in order, as it's drivers are updated fully, and it gets a very solid connection, I even had him speedtest it, and he gets a full 150Mb/s speed through it.
