So I unplugged the power button wire and the whole plastic shroud piece came off with it. The pins did get bent a bit but I straightened them out. I removed the plastic bit which broke in the process and just plugged the wire back in. It seems to be working fine. In the pictures you'll see the plastic that normally surrounds the pins, like the others next to it, is gone.

I'm not really sure it matters but just wondering if this could be more serious than I think ?

Probably will be okay but I would replace the wire as soon as possible.

Having live conductors/pins exposed is not a good thing.

At the least, if you are comfortable with such doing such things, then carefully wrap or cover exposed conductors with a bit of electrical tape as a temporary fix.

Do so, if you do so, with the system powered off and unplugged.

Not to worry.

The power button is a momentary switch that temporarily shorts the two PWR pins on the motherboard.
It does not carry any current. If it happens to short, it may do nothing, or if held for 4 seconds, it will force shut down the pc.
I think your fix is fine.
If you have a reset button on the case, you could use that instead.

You can also use an external power button (wired or wireless) that connects to your mobo if it stops working.

The SilverStone ES02-USB is a wireless one that gets good reviews.

Search for “external PC power switch button” to find more.
