Full upgrade or just GPU?

Hey Guys,

This is my current config:

Asus P7P55D-E Pro
2x4GB G.Skill F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
I5 750
GTX 460 (Fermi)
SeaSonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W
Western Digital Blue WD10EALS 1TB 7200 RPM 32MB Cache SATA 3Gb/s

I don't play video games like crazy, and I don't try to play the latest games with max details every single day. However, when trying to play Rust recently, I realized that the CG is way too old.

I don't feel like building a new config because I think that it would be overkill with my usage of the computer as far as video games.

I was thinking of buying a GTX 1050 Mini 2GB for $109, but then I have this eternel question: Is that the best for money I can get?

I guess the GTX 1060 will be better, but then I think it's overkill for my usage... I mean, maybe I will try to play GTA 5 and some recent games, but it won't be the main games I play (CS 1.6 and Rust).

What do you guys think? Maybe if the i5 750 bottlenecks anything over the 1050 will help me with the decision?

Look at the Radeon Rx 480 4GB. It is a better value than the GeForce GTX 1060 3GB and Radeon Rx 470 4GB. It is also a substantial upgrade over the GeForce GTX 1050 2GB. The Rx 480 4GB is probably about as high end as I would ever go with that CPU.

With your uses. You can probably squeeze a couple more years out of the CPU. You should also be able to overclock that CPU via a BCLK overclock. Using a Cryorig H7 for a good budget heatsink.

RUST is a very poorly optimized game. There are plenty of games you can handle nicely.

Your CPU is probably the bottleneck for RUST so I don't know if a better GPU will help much.

It's hard to recommend a better GPU without replacing the CPU (and thus most of the computer).

GTA5 is also fairly demanding, but there are much less demanding games. Many are older but still fun so I'm not sure where that puts you.

Looking at benchmark data you MAY be able to reach 60FPS in GTA5 with modest GPU settings though I'm not certain.

Sapphire Nitro cards are generally quite well made.

MSI is a high quality OEM partner as well.

Both cards should be good. For the small cost increase. I would get the faster Rx 480 4GB. So what if the CPU won't max it out on all games at 1920x1080. It will at 2560x1440.

In another year you may be looking at replacing your CPU, Motherboard and RAM. At least you will be happy to already have the Rx 480 4GB ready to go.

This MSI Rx 480 4GB is cheaper. It should also be quieter. Those blower style are generally louder and don't cool as well. They are only an advantage in small cases or when you have multiple cards right next to each other. As you have little airspace and need to dump the hot air out of the case ASAP.

I actually saw that some RX 480 8gb were sold for something like $210 a few days ago on newegg.
I think the best for me is to way for something like this to happen again and to get it.

But it doesnt have the same design that the other Sapphire RX 480 that I have seen before. Do you know the difference?

Do you know if the 4 addition GB of memory are worth the $20 bucks? (8GB instead of 4GB).

The extra 4GB is definitely worth the small expense. 4GB limits the maximum possible settings. As many games can easily use more than 4GB at maximum settings.

The design looks normal to me. It isn't as heavily overclocked from the factory. They are all the same card. You can just overclock it yourself. The limits of that card shouldn't be different than any other. Besides your luck in the chip lottery.

I just saw the XFX 480 RX 8Gb on amazon for $219. Best buy has it, so I should be able to get a price match.

Best Buy would only price match if it is the exact same make and model.

Unless they have changed there policy. The last I checked they won't price match online stores. That was quite a while ago.

XFX is decent for AMD. Sapphire and MSI are better.

There is an 8 pin power slot on the card, but my Seasonic only has 2x6pins, or 2x4. I thought about connecting the 2x4 but it does not fit 🙁

The specs on the PSU says it has one 6+2 pin connector and one 6 pin. The 6+2 pin has two extra pins dangling loose which you hold to the side and use as an 8 pin. It has pegs that stick out to hold it under the rails.
