Fullscreen game issue

I'm playing FFXIV on fullscreen settings (not windowed / not borderless) while using multiple monitors. I'm able to simply mouseover to my other monitor and interact with browsers etc while my game continues on my primary monitor without any effects until I click back on the game. It then flashes for a second, regaining focus I assume, but really causes no problem. I'm trying to help a friend accomplish this, but he can't seem to duplicate it. As soon as he clicks on his second monitor, his game minimizes to the taskbar. I vaguely remember running into this long ago, but don't know if I did something that fixed it or if it was just something that changed on it own.

What we've done so far:
He was previously using Win7 and after updating his videocard drivers, getting him to use DX11 and checking display settings, we then decided he should try Win10. After all that pain, unfortunately it was still no help. We're both now on v1511 build 10586.218.

What else could we try? BTW, I'm not using any 3rd party monitor programs or running any virtual machine stuff.

I dont play ffic but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that you are actually playing in borderless windowed mode and not fullscreen and thats how you need to setup your friend.

I wont rule out that it could be a driver difference issue. I always use Nvidia cards and what you describe for your friend is what happens with me also. When I do have a game that allows me use another monitor while in full screen mode, I always have to alt-tab to get out of the game, not just move the mouse off-screen.

I am absolutely certain, a few times over, that I am not in borderless or windowed mode. Something I did allowed my fullscreen setting to retain mouse movement outside of FFXIV.exe and keep the game from minimizing when I clicked off of the monitor. Fullscreen still gives me higher FPS than borderless as well, about 5fps on avg.

I don't know if its a windows setting or a registry edit...but I'm certain it isn't any 3rd party software. I just don't remember what I did, hence the post.

I'm running 2 nvidia gtx 970's in SLI, he has a gtx 980 TI.
