Funny Worst Case Scenarios?

Not sure about worst case scenarios, but a few good ones below.

You can look at my build in my signature for a laugh.

----

This one begins with my old Athlon Thunderbird 1.0Ghz. One day it shut itself off while unattended. Fired it back up, nothing seems to be wrong. Fans are spinning, programs are working. Put a hand at the back of the computer, hmm feels warmer than it should be.

Boot into the BIOS and look at the chip temperature. 244F (117C), what the..? Cooler making good contact. Everything working, why is it even on and working?! Start poking around, can't find a solution, so just leave it running while I shuffle off and order some new parts. A few days later, same thing, shut itself off. But this time it doesn't come back on.

Take a look inside again and see some black on the ATX connector. Yep, them be melted wires. Chip was working up until this point, so I'm thinking, let's see what happens. So I take the chip and drop it into my other system running a Duron 750. Fires right up, but checked in the BIOS running at 90C and climbing already, so I shut it down.

So I rip the melted ATX connector out with some pliers and pull the motherboard and supply. The supply still fires up on its own. Already basically broken and having a melted board and a misbehaving chip. What to do. I grab my soldering iron and put new wires on the back of the motherboard and run them out the side. I strip the 12 volt lines on the power supply cable and use some heavy duty alligator clips to hook it up, bypassing the melted parts of the connectors.

Shockingly fires up and runs for about a week before the power supply finally popped, and by then my new 1.6Ghz Athlon and motherboard arrived.

My friend had an interesting scenario once. His computer was becoming un-reliable, and one day just didn't want to power on. It would fire up and turn itself off instantly. He tried many things and after getting all the things he tried out of him; I asked "Have you tried taking everything out and plugging them in one at a time until it stops working"

He gives this a try and it starts giving beep codes and eventually boots all the way up. Until he puts in the modem (yes, this goes back that far).

Takes a close look at the modem, the port that was unoccupied had basically corroded until it shorted. Cause: mouse urine. (and yes the case was full of poo and urine, a mouse had been sneaking in between the unused PCI slots) Would have thought that was a huge clue... A quick cleaning and all was well.
