Hi im new here and i did some reading on the road map of AMD..

I was wondering if its still worth it to invest on AM3+ builds since its still cheaper than the i5 up builds..

I do a little bit of both gaming and rendering stuffs for work and school.

Solution
AMD has speculated that the AM3+ socket will be used for sure on Steamroller and most likely on Excavator. That means that the AM3+ socket will most likely be relevant for at least 3 more years. Go ahead and feel confident in your purchase, knowing that no matter what, the AM3+ socket will outlive ANYTHING that Intel currently has.
No one knows for sure yet. My guess is that AMD lets AM3+ die after the current line of FX chips. That doesn't mean they are a bad choice though. If you want to go cheap, get the FX6300 for $120. If you want a $200 chip, get an i5.

it's highly likely AM3+ will die after steamroller... (or even with the steamroller launch)... there seems to be no talk coming out of AMD about a continuation of the FX brand. If they do continue FX cpus they can probably do it on the FM2+ platform considering FM2 and AM3+ are identical sockets (well AM3+ is missing a few pins, but basically they're identical sockets, meaning an AM3+ chip will fit flawlessly in an FM2 motherboard, of course the fm2 motherboard would need a special bios to even recognize it.)

If they do continue steamroller with fx on AM3+, that will be the last chip on the AM3+ platform. AMD HAS stated quite clearly they intend to merge the AM and FM socket for DDR4... probably on an FM3, or AM4 socket (no word on the name of the socket yet)

so im planing to go with a 6300 with extreme 3 or do you think getting 4130 with any z87 board(still looking) gives me better option on upgrades in the next year or so??

ahh thats good to know thank you

I'd like to see a recent source on that Avro. A lot has changed with AMD over the past year. No one is even confident there will be FX versions of Steamroller much less Excavator. AM3+ is more than likely done with Piledriver. Steamroller is likely to be only found in APU form on the FM2+ socket. There will be on AM3+ upgrade path beyond what is available currently.

Last year AMD announced that they will support socket AM3+ through 2015.

However, this year AMD announced they will no longer continue with the FX line of CPUs. That does not absolutely mean there will be no more future generation socket AM3+ CPUs though. It may mean they are discontinuing using the FX name much like how they discontinued using the Phenom name.

But, the problem for the moment is AMD has been silent on future socket AM3+ CPUs. Based on their updated road map, Steamroller is going to be released next year, but only for socket FM2+. There's nothing regarding a Steamroller CPU in their road map for socket AM3+. It has been speculated that Steamroller maybe socket AM4. That contradicts what they stated about the socket AM3+ lasting into 2015. But AMD's change in business strategy may imply that what they stated in the past is no longer valid.

i read something about 30% in shipment of AM3+ for next year and 70% for fm2+.. so investing on fm2+ is better than am3+?? but i haven't seen any good fm2+.. i didnt see any use for apu's since i think its not possible to crossfire it with a gpu higher than its set apu.. or i maybe wrong..

AMD APUs are weaker than AMD CPUs which are weaker than Intel CPUs.

Intel CPUs may be a little more expensive than AMD CPUs, but they are generally worth it. For example, about 2 weeks ago someone wanted to upgrade his Core i7-920 which he bought back in 2008. He complained that he did not want to "pay Intel prices!!!". He was looking to switch over to either the A10-6800k or the FX-8350. I provided him with several CPU performance charts for games with a GTX 690, GTX Titanm Radeon HD 7970, etc. depending on which graphic card the test rig was using.

The A10-6800k lost to both the FX-8350 and the i7-920 by a decent amount; sometimes by a big amount. Those benchmarks should that the FX-8350 either beat, lost, or tied the i7-920. The difference was more or less evenly distributed so overall both the FX-8350 and the i7-920 provided the same perform.

Good thing that person posted his question before simply "upgrading" because I saved him at least $300. Not bad for a CPU that will be turning 5 years old next month.

Honestly, I can't see an i5 with an unlocked multiplier being outdated within the next 4 years so I really think that's about as future proof as it gets for gaming at or under $200. Sure, the 8350 has "8 little cores" like the consoles, but they are each only about 50% as strong as Intel cores to begin with. This means in best case situations in which games are using all 8 cores at 100% efficiency, the 8350 only matches the Intel chip clock for clock. The number of games that do that are slim to none, even with optimizations from the new consoles. Even the Battlefield 4 benchmarks which are supposedly optimized for AMD chips show the 8350 matching or barely beating the now 2.5 year old 2500K at stock clock speeds, keeping in mind the 8350 is already clocked significantly higher. Overclock the i5 to those same speeds and watch that advantage dry up, or compare it to a Haswell i5 with another 15% ipc advantage.

im just a normal gamer and i agree that i5 series are somewhat a standard for gaming rigs nowadays and probably the next 3yrs..but i think the industry is slowly tipping the scale to amd side probably the future proof 3 year range is not that realistic anymore...(just my opinion) but if ever intel somehow manage to monopolize the market and completely wipes out amd in the next 3 years i think we wont see any big advancements after that.. (just my opinion)

I know this was nercrobumped, but I honestly think that AM3+ needs to get replaced. It's just so old now, and the socket is so massive that we cant have good uATX or mITX boards, which is a shame because I would like to use AMD FX processors at those form factors.

If they manage to get the TDP at or below 100w on steamroller, I would just move the FX processors to that socket.

So true ... feel the same way, plus the am3 boards are way behind intel, at least where i live ... could not find a good matx board only atx ... 1155 and 1150 have some great matx boards for a good price. sad i really would like to build a few fx-6300 ... witch cost wise for some people is already a lot.(outside us 😛 )
you still see a lot of am3 boards with serial , no sata3 , no usb3 and not so cheap 😛

I would much rather see any new CPU's (doubtful but hey that's what this thread is about right) on FM2+. It's a much more modern socket and it's associated chipsets are not dinosaurs like the 900 series.
