Hi all.

After hearing the next gen console spec rumours, things are getting more cloudy for me.
The Xbox 720 for example can't run the Unreal Engine 4 (Good Samaritan example) since it requires at least the equivalent of an i5 and GTX 680 with about 8 gigs RAM. Forget about Avatar type graphics.

So, what's in the crystal ball for PC gaming?
1. Consoles will be much better than expected, they can run Unreal 4, CryEngine 4, even with near Avatar type graphics. These will then get ported to the PC. Android/iPhones/tablets will get this when they are ready.

2. Game publishers go from the "bottom up". They target smart phones. Then the smart phone games get ported to consoles, and then ported from console to PCs! Upgrade your rig for Angry Birds!

3. Graphic card makers and game studios WANT to make good stuff, even if consoles & tablets don't have the balls for it. Cards and game engines WILL advance anyway. Games with high-tech engines will come for the PCs FIRST, then to console when they can. Then to phones/tablets when they can.

I will personally want to see real-time ray-tracing, but I don't see this happening anytime this decade.

Any ideas? A question worth asking?
thanks!

pc gaming is catching up fast

no more bad ports like re4 dmc3

console will receive games early but final quality would be best on pc
though console will not require you to upgrade quickly or pay a large sum for a high end pc as games are optimized

as far as tablets games are concerned i dont think anybody will pay 100 dollars for angry birds
tablet games lack length story gameplay quality and are intended for casual gamers and non gamers
if assassins creed bf3 can be made free like angry birds then tablets can crush consoles

catching up to what?

no more bad ports like re4 dmc3
plenty of bad ports, GTA4 and NFS:The Run are the most blatant ones, but the list goes on

not the case, see your own point above

rest of your post is good and I agree that tablets (handhelds) would only crush stationary consoles if big titles come out to them and serious gamers flock to handhelds over stationary console. But due to hardware constraints I personally do not see that happening any time soon, a stationary console will always have superior hardware to a handheld.

catching up to the consoles

a few years ago all the ports were quite terrible to say the least

for example lack of any configurable graphics

re4 did not even have configurable controls
with shift and enter to aim and shoot originally

compared to that i believe pc gaming has significantly improved with developers actually paying some attention to pc games

also darkness 2 is on pc darkness 1 was not
so atleast some developers have started to make their games pc compatible too

not sure about nfs the run gta4 is much better than the old ports or especially ports by capcom

but i agree it is not that good but comparatively better

gta 4 is definately not a very good port

still a great improvement from the earlier ports that is my point
