Hey guys,

TL;DR - I want an X99 Mobo to last 7+ years for streaming and overclocking. What features do/don't I need? Mobo Recommendations?

Not TL;DR - Just buying a Mobo for my 5820K, and I'm completly bewildered by all of the different features and functionalities. I've heard great things about the MSI SLI plus

http://www.amazon.co.uk/MSI-X99A-Sli-Plus-Motherboard/dp/B00V4V4SFC/ref=sr_1_3?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1457564726&sr=1-3&keywords=5820k

But all of the youtube builds I find has the ASUS deluxe in

http://www.amazon.co.uk/ASUS-Z170-DELUXE-Asus-Motherboards/dp/B0126R1XNM/ref=sr_1_20?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1457564726&sr=1-20&keywords=5820k

I've heard about M.2 storage being the next best thing. I've heard USB 3.1 is the next best thing, don't buy a mobo without it. I've heard for overclocking you need more phase voltage regulators.

What do I ACTUALLY need to make this mobo last 7 years comfortably? It will be used for streaming/video editing/overclocking/ and will have 2x GPUs in it. Bonus points for looking Swag. Price isn't a issue, but please justify any additional cost as it would take away from my GPU selection.

Thanks :)

7 years is a LONG time. There is no person on the planet that can give you an answer for that type of duration. No telling what is going to happen, within reason.

Some things to keep current with technology:

USB 3.1 w/ type C connection
WiFi AC
M.2 storage
SLI/Crossfire support
Onboard RAID support for RAID 0 (editing speed) or RAID 1 (mirror for redundancy)

That should hold you off for a good solid 3 years with what you are looking to do. Either board you posted will do the trick. My suggestion would be to not worry about the mobo. Pick one of the two you have mentioned and then get the highest class overclockable (unlocked) CPU, memory and fast storage for your editing requirements.

Your motherboard features are sorta moot, as long as they fill your needs NOW. Who knows what tomorrow brings. I wouldn't sweat it that much.

Future proof is a myth, it's just an unchasable dragon.

In 7 years, something will have happened that makes even the best X99 board today look old. Anyways, since USB 3.1 + PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 exists on X99 today, you would clearly be at a disadvantage if you purchased a board that lacked that. On that alone, you should absolutely be looking for USB 3.1 + PCIe 3.0 x4 M.2 slots.

Now, to last 7+ years I would also strongly suggest bumping your CPU up to the 5930K in order to get the 40 PCIe 3.0 lanes instead of the 28 lanes that the 5820K offers. Just recently we saw an announcement from a company that is producing 10GB/s (80Gbps) SSDs using a PCIe x16 interface. Think about it: can the 5820K run an x16 GPU and an x16 SSD? No, but the 5930K can.

For a 7+ year build, I would also suggest you look at 32GB quad channel kits. Maybe 64GB if you think you'd actually need more than 16GB today.

Thanks man!

The reason I say 4 years is because my current PC has lasted that long, and even though it's still rocking 6x USB1.0 and 1x USB 2.0, I don't feel like right now (before editing / streaming) it's holding me back, but it could be a LOT better lol!

But now that I'm not student anymore and I can actually afford things 😀, if I buy a new mobo now would I kick myself for not getting feature X.

I don't know what WIFI AC is (wireless card maybe?)

Do you think M.2 will actually be a thing for desktop PCs? It looks to me like really expensive small memory. Or can you put your OS on it and run your computer from a SSD for #DemSpeedz

Wise words haha!

Wow, Can't believe those extra lanes will be useful now! Unfortunately I cannot justify an extra £150 on the 5930K, the performance isn't a big factor and I'm sceptical the 5820K may be overkill anyway.

By 'quad channel kits'.. what do you mean by that? RAM? I was just gonna get 2x 8GB DDR4 sticks

If your looking for a awesome x99 board, in my opinion I would suggest Asus x99-E WS/USB 3.1
it has 12 usb ports with 3.0 and 3.1,12x sata ports i belive,7x pcie slots, plx chips that gives extra pci lanes even with 5820k.
its the only x99 board that can run 4x gpus at x16 speed and a bunch of other features.

check out https://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/X99E_WSUSB_31/
But if you chose this its wise to check out the qvl list for which RAM that are compatible with mobo, I bought this kit CMD32GX4M4A2800C16,but that was because its the only kit available in my country and that was on the list.

Thanks for the recommendation! I haven't bought, but will soon buy the AS Rock Fatial1ty

Looks cool was my main point. It's got 3.1, not too pricey, M.2, pre-programmed OC settings for a 5820K, 3 way SLI. What do you think?
