Hey guys, going to upgrade my z97 to something I can sli my 970. I was wondering if anyone could read the future for me (I cant) and tell me whether I should try and get a board that supports m.2 or SATA Express.

Or if you could recommend a fairly future proof motherboard for 1150 socket. Not terribly fussed on price (300 usd or below, cheaper the better obviously)

Cheers.

Get a Z170 motherboard, like the GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-Gaming 3, GIGABYTE GA-Z170X-Gaming 7, ASUS Z170-A, ASRock Z170 Extreme4, or MSI Z170A GAMING M5. There are lots to choose from it depends on your budget and the features you want and those you can afford.

lol "squiggle-foofoey standard."

heres my reasoning

sata express is 10Gbs

m2 is already at 32Gbs at pci-e x4 that leaves pci-e x8 and x16 as future possibilities

m2 tiny form factor means it will easily fit in just about any device

so who would want a 10Gbs sata express drive when m2 is already way past it?

yeah anythings possible thats true

but still got the samsung sm951 on my xmas list

only thing is dont think it would be bootable with my old z68 board

so a full upgrade may be in order even though my 2600k still cuts it

I'm guessing it won't be bootable unless you have some sort of adapter.

i am not sure even with a pci-e adapter it will be seen as a boot device

should show as a storage device no problem

and possibly if i was to install windows to a ssd and put the boot record on that then clone windows to the sm951

then do a bootrec /fixmbr with both of them connected i might get lucky

but its a 4/5 year old motherboard to be fair so cant expect miracles
