Fx-4100 overclocking on an old motherboard

I have an aging fx-4100 that has served me well over the years and I plan to upgrade soon to an fx-8320 and I have some questions.

1) Can I safely oc the 4100 to something like 4.0ghz on my Gigabyte GA-880GMA-USB3 with aftermarket aircooling?

2) As I plan to OC the 8320 to at least 4.0 - 4.2Ghz would watercooling be necessary?

3) I am between the Asrock fatal1ty 990fx killer 990fx and the Asus M5A99FX Pro R2.0 to combo with the fx8320. Which is better between the two? And are there any other good motherboards for overclocking at around the same price range?

I honestly wouldn't overclock the 4100 on the GA-880GMA-USB3. It has an average power phase design (4+ 1) and doesn't have a heatsink on the VRMs to dissipate the increased heat from the increase in voltage.

No, water cooling wouldn't be necessary for a 4.2 OC with a 8320.

I would go with the ASRock Fatal1ty Killer motherboard with the 8320. It has a good power phase design (8 +2) and ample cooling for the VRMs on the motherboard. Equipped with an aftermarket cooler and you'll do well.

I've read in a couple of places that it can achieve quite a bit (4.6Ghz with 23 multiplier) without touching the voltage. Would that be safe?
