Hello, i am wondering on whether i should gte the fx 4170 or the i3 2120... i plan on mostly gaming and on a 600$ budget and these are about in the same price range.

The FX4100 is $110 and the phenom and i3 are $130 at least. The difference is significant depending on the benchmarks and it is much better if you consider its better in 95% of benchmarks with some as significant as 30% advantage. Phenom II is better but also more expensive harder to find now.

Really.. You should at least do your homework.

Phenom II 965 $110 Set multiplier to 18.5x and you have a Phenom II 980 no aftermarket HSF needed

FX-4100 $110 Set multiplier to whatever you want and it will still be inferior to Phenom II

i3-2120 $125

You don't have to argue with me about the i3. Phenom II > i3 all day every day if you ask me... But I'm sorry, forget the FX-4100. Its a lost cause.

so do you think AMD has all their 'chips' in the Piledriver release.?
I dunno lol. I'd hate to see AMD fail. We really don't need another Microsoft in terms of monopolies. Radeon is fine, it holds its own with Nvidia just fine, but is that enough to keep em afloat? All I can say is, when Mr Obama decided to bail out all those big banks who got themselves in hot water because of their own greed, I objected to the "they're too big to let fail logic". But when we're talking about computers and only 2 companies to pick from, the other known to demonstrate unlawful methodology to crush their competition, I'd be more apt to support a bailout for AMD than Bank of America. Our society such as it is at this point in time needs computers to "survive". We need competition in this market.

taking better i5's (not 2300) over 8120..
I still look at single core (per core) performance including IPC..
all FX-Bulldozers fail in that..
Well, they do, at least compared to other CPUs, but I don't necessarily see it as a deal breaker as to make them completely unconsiderable. I think its to an extent of the logic of, once you've seen how fast the Ferrari is, the Mustang GT just doesn't impress you any more. If that makes any sense lol.

sell it and then with the money upgrade at a more minimal expense..
that's how I have gotten most of my units up-to-date or close to it..
Max is happy with it, his grandfather paid for it for a birthday gift, unless somethings broke, I ain't touching it. You've seen what he looks like, hes a little vampire-elf hybrid, I fear his mystical powers. :ouch:

lol. I have no comment either way, as I know nothing about what they did and didn't do regarding software developers during the design phase. I don't know what is considered an industry norm in that respect. (meaning if its perfectly normal for software developers to be allowed sneak previews or not)

The module nonsense, I'd say its both compromised, which is to be expected for a new architecture, and ahead of its time. Since we're not quite there yet in terms of everything being multithreaded, but we are certainly heading in that direction I think. Even so, it does seem like AMD took a gamble I wouldn't have taken trying something so radically different when they're already hammered by the competition 5 to 1.

I was wondering then how the hell did he see my desktop.... X6 thread lol

Yeah that was Iraq, Basrah Palace quite a few years ago the AK belongs to some poor sap private contractor (not the wealthy western ones the cheap 3rd world suicide jockeys they hired for the really sh*t jobs). I'm a civilian these days had my dose of "fun"

since you seem to not click on a link provided, here is a screen shot of a bench:

now how am i talking "junk"? kettle meet pot because:

metro the only game? me thinks not, here you go see how BFBC2 uses four, 2 real and 2 threaded cores:
Undervolting i3 2120 (the only "fun" there is)

if you can read a spreadsheet @ 7:16 all cores were being used on minute after the game started.

lets see now, first you claim i am talking junk and then state metro is the only game that uses 4 cores. but i could believe you "cherry picked" that benchmark and made your erroneous claim to validate it as the only reliable source to show favoritism.

then you want to make a comparison to a few generations old i5 and then follow that up with a screen shot of the game not using the HT from an i7. so what are you saying? your "proof" doesn't seem too consistant as far as using a standard for an example, could you dummy it down for an idiot like me? :)

why are you fools even giving this clown the time of day.?
we ran his alter ego 'triny' away so I do not know why he comes with this ignorance but it get worse when you fall into his traps....

'esrever' is a blinded fanboi troll.
period..
had a few days of doing some actual work for pay and not involved in any other thread ATM.

ok? 😛

downtown toledo is a joke, wow! 5th third field to see the mudhens.

i hate detroit, a freaking armpit of a city. i miss cleveland.

What I'd like to know is why AMD screwed up Bulldozer so much. They have access to Intel's chips, engineers that should have an idea of the market and where to position product and they came up with Bulldozer? ?

Though we said that a million times but i'm gonna say it again. The i3 is only faster in games which don't need more than 2 cores...
