well i have been thinking about it a long time and i might as well write it down.
My experience overclocking the AMD FX 6300 was just AWFUL. And you just cant overclock the bloody thing on the m5a97 (970 chipset) I suppose.

Following the various guides, in the AI tweakers settings, i changed
Ai Overclock Tuner - Manual
AMD Turbo CORE Technology - Disabled
DRAM 1600Mhz @ 1.5v
CPU/NB Frequency - 2200Mhz
HT Link Speed - 2600Mhz
CPU & NB Voltage - Manual Mode
Core C6 State - Disabled
HPC Mode - Enabled
Amp Master Mode - Disabled

in the various guides, there is a mention of the digi + Power settings as well but i couldnt just find it in the bios (mind you i updated it to the latest version as well but no luck

I then changed the Cpu and NB voltages to the stock voltages of my chip (Every chip is different) And then i went about changing the cpu ratio. But this bloody thing just wont stay stable beyond 3.8 GHz i.e. 19 on the multiplier . Whenever i booted into windows and began stress testing with prime95 after five minutes i would begin to get the damned ILLEGAL SUMOUT ERROR
and i have looked everywhere but noone could answer what was the cause behind or how to fix.

To fix it i did--
1. increase the VCORE voltage - no luck
2. increase the north bridge voltage - no luck
3. closed all the unwanted software while testing- no luck
My temperatures when this error occured were below 50

And now i think it is time to call it quits. If you get the illegal sumout error then i guess it is time to stop the process and go back to the stock settings.
If there is someone who knows the answer then it would be very well appreciated.

My specs
cpu- amd fx 6300
mobo- asus m5a97 r2.0
ram- A-data xpg series ddr3 1600 mhz
psu- corsair cx500

The temp simply means you need better cooling. The important thing is to find how high it can first go on the multi alone.
What cooler are you using? And which gfx card?

yeah i know that i need a better cooler but i have the cm hyper tx3 evo. And it should be able to handle a sane overvlovk of just 4.1 Ghz.
i have the sapphire r9 270 x dual x. But what does this have to do with oc?

I just wanted to know if the entry level Corsair 500W PSU was marginal for the card you were using. Maybe the problem with the OC was due to poor voltage regulation starting with the PSU.

But if you set everything back to stock settings in BIOS (with turbo mode disabled), you should get all cores to at least 4.1 with no sweat. If your temps are an issue even at that point, you need to investigate what is wrong with the cooling. Even the little 92mm cooler should allow that with safe temps. Case air flow good? Cable management?

Use AOD and watch thermal margins instead of core temps. As long as you can keep thermal margins in the double digits, you are safe. http://www.techspot.com/downloads/4645-amd-overdrive.html
Here is an explanation of why you want to use that instead of 3rd party temp pgms with Visheras: http://www.tomshardware.com/faq/id-2122665/understanding-temperature-amd-cpus-apus.html

Well i have the cooler master k350 mid tower ATX case. It is an entry level case, it is not very big in size. The cable management is above average (keeping in mind this was my first built) and the airflow is okay. I have a 120mm intake and 120mm exhaust case fan.
about the thermal margins, i will have to get back to you tomorrow as Its 3 am here :/
