I'm currently in the process of upgrading my rig. Soon I will have a fx 6300 lying around. I'm currently running a home server with a raspberry pi, which is fine but limited and underpowered. It does have the benefit of low power consumption.

I'm considering making the fx 6300 into a server, but I don't want the thing to drive up my power bill with a TDP of 95 watts. Any thought on this? I'd be running Ubuntu server with maybe ipfire using VirtualBox.

Lastly I'm wondering if an i3 would be better served as a server, but the fx 6300 is tempting because I already have it.

Solution
The power savings would probably take a few years to make up for the cost of the new i3 and motherboard. Just use the 6 core and you could run it at lower clock and voltage if you dont need the extra performance.

Sounds good I'll try out the fx 6300, maybe get a watt meter and run some experiments. Any other suggestions for saving power? Motherboard or memory suggestions? I'd most likely get a micro atx case for it.
